When it comes to historical in Tamil cinema, the legendary works of the Kalaingar Karunanidhi are inevitable. People still enjoy Manohara, but what lacks in Ponnar Shankar (PS) is its grip in screenplay. With a real heavy star cast, with lots of scope for the war the director could have taken efforts to depict the real Tamil warfare. One who has watched "The Lord of the Rings", will take no time in guessing Nasser's character and wardrobes look much like Gandalf-the white. Even the war sequences look very much alike. For anyone like me what a historical means is something that we watched all over in the second half of Aayirathil Oruvan (new), by Director Selvaraghavan.

With lots of expectations on Ilayaraja's music, no song really stands to hit our lips. The director could have definitely taken some more efforts in focusing on Tamil people life by then. For actor Prashanth, its really a great come back, his physique does suit the character, but Ponnar and Shankar could have been differentiated. They walk, look and ride alike throughout the movie. A wonderful acting opportunity missed.

Overall, it is a movie with different genre, and a really brave attempt to bring back historical in to Tamil cinema, kudos to that.
