commercial movies are not your cup of tea,
then Selva’s Aayirathil Oruvan is
for you!!
Things to keep in mind before watching
the movie:
This is a fantasy movie and not a historical
one. Please do not question relevance and
proofs for the Cholas you watch on screen
to the ancient Cholas.
Pay
attention to the disclaimer and the initial
introduction before the actual movie starts,
besides checking who is sitting next to
you in theatre.
If
you got difficulties in understanding
the Sangam Tamil, listen to the song which
Parthiban sings about their life and pay
attention to the paintings shown by Parthiban.
If not watch for the second time and it
will answer your doubts.
Stop
comparing the scenes and stunts with other
Hollywood movies and concentrate on the
movie till it ends.
Do
not expect a ‘kuthu’ song
or an opening song.
This film is certified as A and whoever
complained that this film is not suitable
for family audience has to be ashamed
of himself for not knowing the difference
between U, A and U/A
Let me list out the notable elements
in the movie which deserves appreciation
and a big WOW:
The script: never seen
and never heard in Indian Cinema
The narration and screen play:
have you any clue how to make a fantasy
movie? If not, please watch Aayirathil
Oruvan
The cinematography: unlike
regular Tamil movies, there is no shaky
close ups of the hero and villain. You
could see both the art and casting in
the single frame with an apt lighting
and vivid details.
The Art direction: when
creativity and originality meets, the
byproduct is seen in AO
Casting: we have only
seen 100 different dancers dancing behind
our hero and his lady love. But Aayirathil
Oruvan has made that odd number of actors
to be an inevitable part of the movie.
BGM: one of the best
and first of its class in Indian Cinema.
Songs: First of its kind
in Indian Cinema- fits in the right place
and not alien to the movie.
Stunts: we do not want
to see our hero jumping from skyscrapers
and doing aerobics. Yet visually splendid
stunts are in place and who said sword
fight is extinct? You can see a master
class of the art in this movie
Production: no hero value,
no Harris Jayaraj or Rahman, never heard
and tested genre, are you game for it?-
The answer is Raveendran- The brave heart
of Indian Cinema- Hats off to you for
taking the honor and producing a visual
classic.
Direction: with this
movie, Selva leaves an open statement
to all magnum opus directors: “can
you make bigger than this?”
Our
audiences are always obsessed with Hollywood
movies and they do not fail to watch and
appreciate the movie even though they
do not understand the movie fully or the
dialogues in the movie or the script of
the movie. We just accept it whole heartedly
because it is from Hollywood-the mother
of World Cinema. Should we call it ‘ignorance’
from our part?
Let’s compare our Aayirathil Oruvan
with the latest Hollywood sensation, Avatar:
We all enjoyed Avatar, for it is a 3D
movie and from the director of Titanic,
the all time big hit. Assuming that you
watched the English version of Avatar:
Did you (general Tamil audience) really
understand the script of the movie? Did
you understand all the words/dialogues
spoken in the movie? Did you really understand
the narration? But what made us like the
movie are its rich visuals and animated
flora and fauna presented in a 3D environment
besides the war scenes. We watched it
multiple times with our family and friends
and made it a big hit and proclaimed “Hail
Hollywood!!” Did we really see the
flaws in the movie? Did we question anything
which we found fishy in the movie? The
answer is NO-because it is Hollywood and
we like it.
Now
let’s see Aayirathil Oruvan: we
did understand the script of the movie,
we did understand the narration, we did
understand the dialogues except for the
Sangam Tamil (not much), we did enjoy
the visual effects, and so what is stopping
us from liking this movie? Do we expect
our directors to present a 3D glass to
watch Tamil movies? If you liked and loved
Avatar, you got to like Aayirathil Oruvan.
It’s our ignorance and non appreciative
attitude which makes us downtrodden and
under developed in World Cinema. If we
continue to have the same attitude of
not supporting movies like Aayirathil
Oruvan, Pokkisham, Naan Kadavul, Anbe
Sivam, etc., we will never see ourselves
as one of the pillars of world cinema.
I
(an ardent Tamil movie fan) like to congratulate
Selvaraghavan and the entire crew for
their hard work and efforts to present
THE BEST movie in Indian Cinema. Despite
the bad reviews and controversies on the
movie, I request our audience to take
a look at the movie (in theatres) and
appreciate the effort. I request Selvaraghavan,
Cheran, and Bala, Kamal Haasan, not to
back off from their originality and creativity
and continue delivering better results
and escalate the status of Tamil Cinema.
Hail Tamil/Indian Cinema!!! Be Indian!!
Like Indian!! Happy Republic Day!
Regards,
Paul C
