Personality this week - Article: Vikram
Article

If there were a story of the Ugly Duckling turning into the beautiful swan in modern film history, it would very well apply in the case of current hot favorite, Vikram. Despite being in the industry for more than a decade and a half, he attained the current cult status only after several gut-wrenching years of struggle. He belongs to a family with no film background. He went to the Montfort School in Yercaud. Since his schooldays, he showed great talent for music and theatrics. He participated in several plays and won appreciation for his talent.

He attended college in Chennai, where the student drama societies gave him the staple to hone his acting skills. Taken on board by P.C. Sriram in his film, Meera, he gave a sensitive performance of the romantic hero. Although the film was reasonably successful, it did exactly rain offers for Vikram. He turned to playing the second hero in small budget films in Tamil and more so in Malayalam. He earned his bread and butter from Malayalam films and also achieved some creative satisfaction as a dubbing artist.
During those years of struggle, he got the chance to work with some of the finest technicians in the industry who definitely had a good word to say about him. They watched helplessly as Lady Luck did not smile on this obviously talented actor. Vikram, however knew in his heart that his passion for cinema would definitely be rewarded and it was only a matter of time before he became a star.

During the year 2000, a young maverick director called Bala was scouting for someone with a script which the leading actors would not touch with a bargepole. It was that of an intense man who becomes a lunatic when his romance goes awry.Bala had great faith in his script and he had no second thoughts about casting Vikram. His performance in the role of someone who exists in the fringes of our so-called civilized society made the audience give him a standing ovation.
The film also had disturbing indictment on the way we treat the less fortunate mortals. The film became a runaway hit and Vikram arrived on the Tamil scene.

The rest as we say is history. Post-Sethu, all his films have created much expectation in the minds of the audience and Vikram has always fulfilled it beyond doubt. Dil, Gemini and Sami also showed his prowess in action-oriented roles. His out-of-the-world performance as the grave digger in Pithamagan brought him the National award last year. His recent release Anniyan, which came after a gap of two years is ringing in the cash registers. His next offering will be Maja.

Hats off to you, Cheeyon, we love you!
