Surya is the son of Markandayen of Tamil cinema, Siva Kumar and is one of the leading actors in Tamil cinema. After finishing his science degree in Loyola, Surya worked in a garment company without revealing that he was the son of Siva Kumar. It was Vasanth who saw the actor within Surya and signed for his project Nerruku Ner. The movie was produced by Manirathnam and the other lead role was Vijay who was a friend of Surya.

Nerruku Ner was not a big hit and Surya’s consecutive movies flopped in the box office. His first reasonable success was in the movie Poovellam Kettupar but Surya did’nt impress others as he was not good in acting, stunts or dance. His next movie with Vijay, Friends was a big hit but it was Vijay who walked away with laurels. Director Bala who turned fortunes for Vikram was able to nurture the acting talents of Surya and their combination in Nandha worked well. Though Nandha didn’t click in the box office, the movie provided Surya the scope for acting and he used it effectively.

Surya’s next venture was with Vikraman in the movie Unnai Ninathu and the movie was able to record good collections. Mounam Pesiyadhe was a totally different movie and the audience felt that other than Surya no one else could have given the movie the glossy look.

Surya’s first all round hit was Kakka Kakka. The movie was entertaining and it depicted the real life of a cop. Surya was perfect in the role with his looks, good physique and his dialogue pronunciation. The movie made good collections and this movie promised the producers that Surya’s movie will gross huge collections. His role in Pithamagan with Vikram in the lead role and directed by Bala was lively and he acted in the comic role with ease.

In the movie Peralagan, Surya acted in two roles, one as a boxer and the other as a handicapped but a confident phone booth keeper. His role as the handicapped was praised by many people and his critics were also in praise of him. His role in Ayutha Ezhuthu was too good a role to describe. He acted with Madhavan and Sidharth and his role as a student leader was an impressive one. His comic sense and dancing skills were evident in the movie Mayavi.

Surya’s next release Ghajini is the most expected movie of the season and he is acting as one of the top ten billionaires in the world. The movie’s songs are already big hits and the trailer promises an interesting movie. His present project is with director Hari for the movie Aaru with Trisha in the lead female role. The movie is produced by director Saran under the banner Gemini Film Circuit.
