Q:
Where did you develop this penchant for socially
conscious comedy?
Vivek:
I began my career in 1987. I struggled to find a
foothold because my creative instincts did not find
the same wavelength with producers and directors.
Once the new trend set in, I found my brand of comedy
finding acceptance. It was then that I started thinking
about the power of the medium. The efforts of great
men like NSK, Periyar and Annadurai aroused the
passion to work for social awareness. I thought
I could make a difference in my own way and I have
found limited success.
Q:
What do you think about the relevance of comedy
for the success of a movie?
Vivek:
Comedy is the most important element because if
you don’t have comic interludes, it will be
difficult to sustain audience interest. Comedy has
added value to the screenplay in several films.
As it is cinema is a medium for entertainment and
what better way than to make people laugh.
Q:
Do you like comedy embedded in the story or you
prefer your own track?
Vivek:
The effort is the same. In the case of embedded
comedy, you need to match your tuning with the lead
stars. Your role could be diminished or enlarged
depending upon the requirements of the screenplay.
In independent tracks, you have greater choice and
your adaptability will bring better results.
Q:
What do you have to say about awards for comedy
artistes?
Vivek:
Apart from awards instituted by magazines based
on reader response, there is no institutional recognition.
This is a sore lacuna which has to be removed soon.
Q:
What are your future plans?
Vivek:
People spend their money to let me make them laugh.
I feel it is my responsibility to make them think
as well. Hence, I would like to do meaningful comedy.
My soon to be released Solli
adippendi will also be a turning
point. Wait and watch.
