There
is always a lot of anticipation when there
is news about the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
And when they combine with Karan Johar,
the music fever certainly shoots up. After
their successful MNIK, the trio has come
together again with Karan Johar. This
time it is for "We are family",
a remake of the yesteryear Hollywood romantic
comedy Stepmom. Let’s see what's
in store in this album.
Ankhon Mein Neendein...
Vocals: Rahat Fateh Ali,
Shreya, Shankar
Lyrics: Irshad
Kamil
Ankhon Mein Neendein starts quite interestingly
with classical notes with Shreya Goshal
and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in full control
right from the word go. But when you expect
magic from the |

duo,
this one just falls flat as just another Bollywood
romantic number with some ordinary lyrics. Tere bina
ho na savera, aankhon se ho aankhon pe ye jaadogari...
wonder how many times we have listened to such lyrics.
Not the best but worth a listen.
Dil Khol Ke Lets Rock...
Vocals: Anushka Manchanda, Akriti,
Suraj Jagan
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
We wait a few seconds wondering what's in offer next
and you are blown away by the blazing strings and
the bold voice of Anushka Manchanda. You suddenly
feel a sense of déjà vu if you love
the music of the late sixties and early seventies.
Elvis ... yes too. SEL have done a neat job with the
music arrangement even giving it a "desi"
touch in the middle. Akriti does a good job supporting
Anushka while Suraj has very little to do. Lyrics
don’t matter as long as you shake your feet
with this number. A very exciting song in the album.
Let your hair down and Dil khol ke let's rock folks.
Reham O Karam...
Vocals: Vishal Dadlani, Shankar Mahadevan
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt Guptan
Reham O' Karam starts with a sober Shankar Mahadevan
enchanting us with lovely piano notes and Irshad Kamil's
lyrics. The transition to the next level in the song
is quite sudden but it works. And the voices of Vishal
Dadlani and Shankar work wonders as they simply kindle
our emotions along with thrumming guitars. Easily
the pick of the album.
Hamesha
And Forever...
Vocals: Sonu
Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
As if to remind us that this movie is also about varied
emotions, we have Hamesha & Forever. This melody
starts on a sweet note but the glum lyrics and chorus
suggest otherwise. Sonu Nigam and Shreya Goshal give
their best but there is nothing new in this song.
Maybe this song may appeal when we see it on screen
in sync with an apt situation.
Sun
le Dua Yeh Aasman (Theme Slow Version)...
Vocals: Shreya Goshal
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Another melody follows. This time it is Shreya Goshal
who says Sun Le Dua Yeh Aasman. A slower version of
the theme, this song has a very lovely rendering in
the background with flutes and the piano. We can't
just stop admiring the magnificent voice of Shreya
Goshal. Slow by all means in today's standards, this
one sure has a soothing feel to it.
We Are Family (Theme)...
Arrangement:
Dominique, Clinton Cerejo, Neuman
We are then treated to a lovely melodious theme "We
are Family" conducted by Dominique, Clinton Cerejo,
Neuman. This one sums up the overall feel of the album.
Contrary to a commercial movie album where the tempo
raises from the first to the last, this one mellows
down towards the end. It just gives us a feeler of
what to expect out of the movie.
Verdict:
It’s hard to forget Karan Johar when we listen
to the songs as many of them seem to share his sentiments
that he normally handles in his movies. He is just
a producer in this movie, remember. “We are
family” may not be Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's best
album till date, but they have certainly given the
album a certain feel which surely augurs well for
the movie. |
