A
remake of a classic is no easy job, but Priyadarshan is
very experienced and he has remade many classics in Hindi
with amazing grace. Bhool Bhulaiyaa a remake of Manichitrathazhu
has been the most anticipated movie this year thanks to
the hit soundtrack and Akshay Kumar’s growing popularity.
Will the movie live up to its hype? Will the movie pay homage
to the Malayalam original or its commercial takes in Kannada
and Tamil? Hoping to find the answers to all these questions
one sits in the theatre when the lights are switched off.

Make
room guys as one more version of the original has
come and has indeed lived up to its expectations and
more. Being a person who has seen both the original
Malayalam version and Tamil Chandramukhi I was no
stranger to the story. But still Priyadarshan takes
us for a joy ride which will be a roller coaster ride
for those who are alien to the other versions.
The movie is a commercial take on Manichitrathazhu
but less commercial than “Aptha Mithra”
and “Chandramukhi”. The movie is about
a descendent (Shiney Ahuja) of a king who comes back
to his home land and wishes to stay in the palace
which is considered to be haunted. But Shiney Ahuja
and his beautiful wife Vidya Balan, being youngsters
of today, rubbish the people’s opinion and stay
in the house.

Vidya
Balan out of curiosity opens a door which is not meant to
be opened and all hell breaks loose. When everything seems
to go out of hand, Shiney Ahuja seeks the help of his friend
Akshay Kumar who is a psychiatrist. Will the psychiatrist
become an exorcist? Watch the movie to find out.
Priyadarshan is in total command as he impresses from the
word go. Though the first half starts slowly once the door
is opened the movie picks up speed and once Akshay is introduced
just before the interval the movie gains more speed. The
second half also suffers a few minor speed breakers in the
form of songs but the riveting climax makes you forget all
those little glitches.

The
acting is worthy of notice and topping the chart is
Vidya Balan. A role which has showered awards for
everyone who has played it previously, like Shobana,
Soundarya and Jyothika is given to almost a newbie
and Vidya pounces on it and grabs the opportunity,
though she should seriously consider losing some weight.
Akshay Kumar is the pick of the cast, as the experienced
actor does the role with finesse. Shiney Ahuja does
his work naturally but as expected he doesn’t
have a great deal to do once Akshay makes his entry.
Amisha Patel doesn’t have much scope to showcase
her histrionics, not that anyone was expecting much
out of her but still she impresses with her looks.
Paresh Rawal is excellent as usual and Rajpal yadhav
evokes laughter whenever he is on screen. But the
highlight of the film would be Rasika Joshi’s
performance. She has done a role which would be as
popular as Kal Ho Naa Ho’s Kanta behen role.
Manoj Joshi is very natural. Vineeth comes back to
do the role which he has done twice already and he
does it with ease though the dubbed voice doesn’t
suit him.

In
the technical department Bhool Bhulaiyaa is brilliant thanks
to the superb camera work by Thiru, exceptional art direction
by Sabu Cyril and the foot tapping numbers composed by Pritam.
The background score by Sandeep Chowta helps bring the eerie
atmosphere. Choreography by Pony Verma is praise worthy,
especially for the last song.
Overall the movie is for those who want to get entertained.
A movie filled with laughter and scary moments which can
act as a perfect date movie. One last note: don’t
be in a hurry to get out of theaters once the mystery has
been solved. For once the title credits at the end just
rock with the already super hit Hare Krishna Hare Ram song
being played, the video is really worth a watch. Don’t
miss this one. About Bhool Bhulaiyaa: if you have seen the
originals, you will like this remake, if you have not, you
will love it.
