Jane Austen’s Emma gets desified in Sonam Kapoor starrer Aisha directed by Rajshree Ojha. The film, a contemporary take on Austen’s creation had several things going for it, the impressive music, the interesting trailer, Sonam Kapoor’s heightened star status post IHLS. And for the fact that its been quite a while since Indian movies tried to make a proper effort to impress the fairer sex, the movie has basically placed its bet |

on the ‘girl power’ and seeing the response of it in the theatre, the marketing had worked as planned but is it good enough to sustain? Well, let’s get onto it then.
Aisha (Sonam Kapoor) is a high society, spoilt, confused girl who thinks whatever she does has a multilayered good for others. After successfully matching her aunt’s life with an army officer, she starts thinking herself to be a love doctor but her experimental project Shefali (Amrita Puri) goes awry and in the process she loses everyone who made her life tick; the ever sarcastic and stylish best friend, Pinky Bose (Ira Dubey) and her childhood friend, Arjun (Abhay) who constantly criticizes and questions her intentions. It takes few twists in tale for her to realize what life is all about but is it too late for her to find Mr. Right?
Rajshree Ojha, is quite a talent, and we need to applaud her for coming up with the very first (so they say) chick flick in India. But she has dragged a simple story quite far which might pull its impact a bit back but there are several positives which has enough in them to make a mark at the ticket windows. The climax misses the impact and is too long drawn and looks hurried up, story-wise.
What makes Aisha an enjoyable watch is the ensemble cast led by Sonam Kapoor, who surprises everyone with a matured performance, which would surely make her star dad feel real proud. She looks sexy and has lived her character which was missing in all her previous endeavors. Abhay Deol, plays the suave matured guy to the T. He never makes a mistake, does he? Perfect!!. His chemistry with Sonam is scintillating. Ira Dubey, the talented theatre artist and daughter of Lilette Dubey, is a treat to watch. She brings the Pinky Bose character alive. Amrita Puri is just the most interesting find of the year. She looks fabulous and does such a complex role of a Haryana gullible girl so easily, which leaves us at awe. Brilliant!! The rest of the cast has also done justice to their respective characters.
The costume designers (Pernia Qureshi and Kunal Rawal) take the crown in the crew department as the costumes are just too good, something which is very important for such a movie. Diego Rodriguez’s cinematography is neat but nothing special about it. Music director Amit Trivedi is in brilliant form; his songs have indeed made the movie even more pleasing.
Overall, a decent chic-flick, which will be quite an enjoyable experience for people who are non readers of the book and are clueless of Alicia Silverstone’s ‘Clueless’. Take your girlfriend to Aisha, for they would love it but for sure you won’t mind seeing beautiful babes on screen, do you?
Aisha will steal you but not completely
