Subramaniya
Siva, who has directed successful films
like Thiruda Thirudi, Pori and Yogi has
chosen to remake the Malayalam film Nandanam
in Tamil as Seedan. The film stars Krishna,
Ananya, Dhanush (in an extended cameo),
Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Vivekh and lyricist
Pa.Vijay. Interestingly, Seedan is music
director Dhina’s 50th film. Pa.
Vijay has penned the lyrics for five songs
and Ugabharathi takes credit for one song.
Let us see how Dhina has scored with his
50th film.

Munpani Kaala Poovil...
Vocals: Shreya Ghoshal
Lyrics: Pa.Vijay
The song begins with carnatic beats and the moment it
starts, you know what to expect. The music is very simple
and the song is dominated by soft notes from the flute.
Shreya Ghoshal’s mellifluous voice cascades high
and low pitches with ease and the song sounds like a
Krishna Bhajan. The song is a potential hit for Shreya
Ghoshal’s voice and her near-perfect Tamil diction.
Valliamma...
Vocals: Shankar Mahadevan and Chinna
Ponnu
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
The beginning rendition by Shankar Mahadevan in this
song reminds us of Pushpavanam Kuppusami’s peppiness
and voice. The song is a mix of proper folk and our
local kuthu beats. There is some nice and fresh Nadaswaram
music which adds the necessary melody to the song. This
is a foot tapping number and Shankar Mahadevan and folk
artist Chinna Ponnu’s voice flow together seamlessly.
The song is here to stay for long.
Enadhu Uyirai...
Vocals: Prasanna & Janaki Iyer
Lyrics: Ugabharathi
Almost all the film albums are never complete without
a romantic number. Enadhu Uyirai is a pleasing romantic
number. The music is nothing novel but it has a strong
classical base with several ‘swaras’ been
sung at the beginning and also in between the song.
Prasanna and Janaki Iyer’s soft voice is apt for
the music and the lyrics. Owing to the popularity of
romantic numbers, Enadhu Uyirai might possibly capture
the listener’s attention for long.
Saravana
Samayal...
Vocals: Hariharan
& Dhanush
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
Hariharan starts the song with a melodious baritone.
The song has an eclectic mix of percussion instruments
and Nadaswaram. The lyrics are mouth-watering, literally.
Dhanush does not sing but says a few dialogues in between
and he sounds exactly like a head cook giving instructions.
We can be almost sure that the song has been picturized
with Dhanush singing and cooking simultaneously. Hariharan’s
voice matches quite well for Dhanush. The song’s
arrangement reminds us of Enna Samayalo from Unnal Mudiyum
Thambi. On the whole, this is the most delightful number
in the album.
Yathumaghiye...
Vocals: Shankar
Mahadevan, Kavitha Krishnamoorthy Subramanian
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
This song is a fast number. The pace picks in just 3
seconds into the song and never drops. It has the highest
and the lowest of the pitches and Shankar Mahadevan’s
voice does complete justice to it. There are classical
beats and swaras in this number too. Kavitha Krishnamoorthy’s
voice weaves smoothly in between Shankar Mahadevan’s
voice. Dhina has used percussion instruments effectively.
The song lyrics and pace sounds like it has an extreme
emotional quotient - probably in desperation to get
back to the loved one.
Oru
Naal Mattum...
Vocals: KS
Chithra
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
This is a solo number by Chinna Kuyil Chithra. The instruments
used are very soft, with flute taking the forefront
again. The song is nothing novel and heavily banks on
Chithra’s voice as the music is very plain.
Verdict:
Though most of the songs have a classical flavour, it
has the potential to appeal the mass and the class equally
due to the nice mix of all genres. Dhina doesn’t
try anything different in the album, but it’s
still a welcome change from the songs these days which
has excess use of guitars, bass, technology and western
instruments. This album that revels in good usage of
percussion and wind instruments is a pleasant album
on the whole and is here to stay for long. And we are
sure hoping for a mouth watering picturization of Saravana
Samayal song! |
