MAGIZHCHI MUSIC REVIEW
Review by : Malathy Sundaram
Music Director : Vidyasagar
Vocals : Chandrayi, Karthik, Manikkavinayagam, Velmurugan, Karunanidhi,
Tirutthani, Gopal Rao, Rajalakshmi, Chitra, Roshini, Madhu Balakrishnan, Binny Krishnakumar
Lyrics : Vairamuthu, Tirutthani, Vaiyampatti Muthusamy, Arivumathi, Pachiyappan

Produced by ‘Athirvu Thiraippattarai’ Manivannan and directed by Gowthaman, this movie, based on Neela. Padmanabhan’s literary work ‘Thalaimuraigal’ is eagerly awaited, because of its weighty story value. It has Gowthaman, Anjali, Seeman, Santhanam, Ganja Karuppu and others starring in it. Vidyasagar scores the music for the film and the album lists six tracks.

Ootthu Thanni Aatthoda...
Vocals: Karthik, Chandrayi
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

A neat folksy number on the Natabairavi scale with pleasing violins, so typical of this melody-maker. Could make it to the charts on the strength of its sultry lyrics.

Thaekku Maramaattam...
Vocals:
Manikkavinayagam,Velmurugan, Karunanidhi, Tirutthani
Lyrics: Tirutthani, Vaiyampatti Muthusamy

Another fast paced folk number with some heady drum work. The lyrics are amusing, really. Clear rendering of words from the singers.

Ucchukkotta Icchu Vacchu...

Vocals:
Gopal Rao, Rajalakshmi
Lyrics: Arivumathi

A delightful number in the Karaharapriya raga scale and Tisra Nadai, where the flute darts into a bit of Hemavathi and Kanada notes, though fleetingly. This sweet duet has been well sung too. The second interlude on the strings with a western touch is very nice.

Selai Kattiya...
Vocals:
Karthik, Chitra, Roshini
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

This is a song of blessing and benediction, interlaced with brother-sister sentiments. Energetic use of thavil, ghatam and native drums add a festive feeling to the song. Karthik brings a rare sowkyam to this number with his voice. The song seems to swing between Anandabairavi and Mohanam ragas.

Kanne Kaniyurangu...
Vocals: Madhu Balakrishnan, Binny Krishnakumar
Lyrics: Pachiyappan

A lullaby, this song. My, what a voice this lady has! Her effortless high-pitched notes lend this song a mild poignancy as do the rare ‘prayogas’ of Harikamboji raga notes used here. Madhu Balakrishnan comes on only at the end.

Koorappattu...
Vocals: Karthik
Lyrics: Pachiyappan

A bit of a dirge, this number. Probably serves to underline sorrow.

Verdict:

Vidyasagar strictly adheres to the theme and tone of this rural story. But he also weaves in his creativity here and there. High on ‘native touch’, this album surprisingly dips a little where melody is concerned. Let us see how they shine in the movie.
