SANDAKOZHI 2 MOVIE REVIEW
Sandakozhi was one of the most important films in Vishal's career and now the sequel to the film has come out after 13 years. Directed by Lingusamy, Sandakozhi 2 marks the 25th film in Vishal's career. Here is the review of the film.
Sandakozhi 2 is about the efforts of Ayya (Rajkiran) and his son, Balu (Vishal), to conduct the Vetta Karuppan thiruvizha, their village's temple festival, without any chaos and problems. Meanwhile, Pechi (Varalaxmi) plans to execute a murder during the festival for personal vengeance. Why does Varalaxmi plan to kill and does the festival happen the way Ayya wanted it to? Catch the film to know the answers to these questions.
The majority part of the first half deals with Vishal and Keerthy's romance and their pairing looks fresh onscreen. The establishment of the new characters into the Sandakozhi franchise happens right from the title credits and the makers immediately inform the audience on what they're going to witness for the next 2.5 hours. It is heartwarming to see Ayya's family again in that grand house, who take us to our natives through their natural performances. The nostalgic visit to Sandakozhi is impressive. Watch out for that scene! One of the major highpoints in the film is the unexpected pre-interval fight sequence. However, the film doesn't have more impactful scenes of that sort.
The template commercial treatment to the screenplay doesn't suit the taste of today’s audience, thereby, failing to establish a connection. The cliched screenplay might give the feel of a deja vu. Having seen many films of this genre with the rural backdrop, things get predictable without giving any bigger excitement. The melodramatic dialogues make the audience feel even more distant. The film finds it hard to come out of this template and falls flat in many places. That becomes one major worry.
Vishal carries the film on his shoulders and as always, scores with his action moves and style. Keerthy Suresh looks vibrant on screen and she pulls it off with her cute expressions and casual attitude. Rajkiran as Ayya holds the audience with his majestic and royal screen presence. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar gets a meaty and intense role and aces it with conviction, coming out of her comfort zone. Munishkanth provides comic relief at the required junctures.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score sets up the festive mood. His music elevates the intensity of the action sequences and the festival portions. Shakthivel’s visuals look neatly composed and the establishment shots of the thiruvizha show the grandeur of the production design.
Director Lingusamy constructs a good amount of emotions neatly with his writing. At the same time, with a more engaging screenplay, this sequel could've lived up to its brand. The freshness is lacking and the audience gets to see something that they've already come across in previous occasions. In a nutshell, Sandakozhi 2 is a template rural action drama that has its moments only at places and fails to give a completeness.
