Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam is an upcoming love story starring debutants Bala Krishna Kola and Wamiqa Gabbi in lead roles. The film is written by Selvaraghavan and directed by Gitanjali Selvaraghavan. Music has been composed by Amrit.

Sarakka
Singers: Amrit
Lyrics: Amrit

The album begins with a bang with Sarakka, an energetic gaana track led by the composer Amrit himself. Despite the typical beats and the done-and-tested composition, it gives out an air of fun because of the cheeky lyrics and Amrit’s boisterous voice.

Mora Saiyya (Yeno Mounam)
Singers: Shakthisree Gopalan, Vijay Prakash
Lyrics: Amrit

This is a song that shows promise from the very opening itself. Beginning on a mellow note with alternating hand-claps against Vijay Prakash’s voice, the song jumps into a powerful chorus where you’re hit by a raw guitar riff. Shakthisree takes over as the female vocal lead and mellifluously balances out with the male vocals on the duet portions, although you definitely would have loved to hear more of her. The sitar solo and the following break-down brings in a brilliant turn to the song. This is one of those tracks that’d make you anticipate how it’ll be represented on screen.

Mokka Piece
Singers: Benny Dayal
Lyrics: Amrit

From the title itself, you’d get that this song aims to incite some mischief and it definitely looks to go down that path. With lyrics by Amrit, Mokka Piece is an urban track with elements of EDM drops as well as strong rock guitar riffs. You can’t help but guffaw mischievously every time the chorus goes ‘Mokkai Piece’ in a very typical Benny Dayal rendition. It’s all fun from the word go!

Maalai Nerathu Mayakkama
Singers: Amrit
Lyrics: Amrit

Of course, when we’re talking about the album to a love story, the ubiquitous romantic number has to come to mind and that’s exactly the role the title track seeks to fulfill. The song brings out another facet of Amrit’s voice; the soft melodies will definitely catch your attention, making you sway to its idyllic charm. The uncluttered blend of the vocals, the soft strumming guitars and the harmonics is what makes this song a hummable companion.

Ennodu
Singers: Amrit, Mili Nair
Lyrics: Amrit

Ennodu opens with heavily synthesized keys dovetailed with hard and fast beats, reminding you strongly of a 90s pop song. Mili Nair has taken on the vocal duties on this one and she’s given it a spin from what she is accustomed to while the male vocals take the song on a more folk-ish tangent. But the song does not have much to offer with its short running time and you’re left wishing for more where, with all the energy built up for the track, it ends too soon.

Two Opposites (Theme)
Singers: N/A
Lyrics: N/A

This track leaves you with a sense of déjà vu because it immediately takes you back to the mood and feel of Selvaraghavan classics like 7/G Rainbow Colony. Although it just stands by as an instrumental interlude in the album, this is something that will hopefully be complemented by the visuals. This instrumental number seamlessly moves into the next track, yet another instrumental piece.

The Return of Love (Theme)
Singers: N/A
Lyrics: N/A

This is a soft, romantic instrumental track that echoes the title song, and its running time of barely a few seconds does not add much to the album.

Verdict: Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam is a commendable first attempt by Amrit.
