It’s quite natural that you are suddenly reminded of Kamal and those landmark kissing scenes are played out like a slide show in your mind after reading the title. There’s no denial that Kamal sensitized his audience to the reality that kissing is an expression of love, a vital one at that. And audaciously so!

This presentation is not necessarily about Kamal’s adventures in kissing. But as smooch has graduated from little-pecks-on-cheeks to full fledged French kisses and become an integral part of Tamil movies, we think it’s necessary to look back and take census. The man who wrote and rewrote all the rules of onscreen kissing constantly raised the bar. If an impromptu kissing in Punnagai Mannan with Rekha was termed passionate, his Mahanadhi act was more on the melancholic side. Kuruthi Punal took a more ‘family’ side and Indian was romantic. Hey Ram should probably win an award for the most intimate kissing scene, thanks to the burning chemistry Kamal and Rani shared on screen. But Kamal seems to have given the kissing bandwagon a break for the time being, we can safely assure.
