This was a breakthrough movie in Kamal's career. Sappani was ignorant, naive and downright dirty with a paan filled mouth but was every inch lovable. It takes guts to act in a multi-starrer and get insulted as he was in the movie. We care but Kamal doesn't and his characterisation of Sappani made 16 vayathinile a cult movie.
