When Kamal decides to direct a film we all know that it is going to be very special. The subject was controversial and extremely sensitive, requiring very fine handling. It was also perhaps the first film that had a subtext of Gandhian principles and directly depicted the violent riots during the partition without having Mahatma Gandhi as the central character. The portrayal of Saket Ram was class personified. But one must say that Hey Ram was a film where Kamal Haasan the film maker came into focus than Kamal Haasan the actor.
