STR made his screenplay writing, directing and double role playing debut with the 2004 film Manmadan. Simbu ghost directed this film under the name of AJ Murugan and the film was a hit and that increased his popularity among the young audience. He played the role of twin brothers where one avenges the death of the other. Giving him company was Jyothika and Sindhu Tholani.
