Ajith, Anirudh, Arya, Dhanush, Siva Karthikeyan, Vijay, Vijay Sethupathi in 2014

January 1, 2014 went on to be a treat for movie buffs, with most stars and production houses releasing their upcoming flicks’ first-looks and teasers. Twitter was extensively used to campaign for their movies. Let’s take a look at the releases lined up.

Thala Ajith and Ilayathalapathy Vijay command the most number of fans in the state, only next to Superstar Rajinikanth.  Both their movies, Veeram and Jilla, respectively, are slated for a Pongal release, and are expected to take record shattering openings. A glimpse of the ensuing clash between the titans was evident from the peaking rise in the view counts of Veeram trailer and Jilla teaser.

The brotherhood of Dhanush, Siva Karthikeyan and Anirudh treated their fans with promos of their respective films.

Dhanush’s Velai Illa Pattadhari, is high on expectations and the teaser promised every bit to satisfy the expectations. Anirudh’s background score had won a lot of appreciation from the online media. Siva Karthikeyan, about Velai Illa Pattadhari, tweeted, “Rocking combo (Dhanush-Anirudh) back again with a theri package:))”

Velai Illa Pattadhari will be the national award winning actor’s 25th film. The movie is helmed by ace cameraman Velraj.

Maan Karate, starring Siva Karthikeyan, Hansika, Satish and Vidyut Jamwal, has story and screenplay by director AR Murugadoss. The first look posters promise to have all the elements of a perfect youthful entertainer. Siva Karthikeyan, the most successful star of 2013 with all his three releases turning out to be hits, is all set to continue his exciting run in the box office.

Anirudh, apart from being the music director of Velai Illa Pattadhari and Maan Karate, was featured in posters of a film titled, ‘Aakko’. The buzz was that the movie would be the acting debut of the music director. Reacting to the news, Anirudh, in his twitter page, said that he is just scoring music, not acting. About the movie's album, he said it will be a full-on Electronic Dance Music album.

UTV Motion Pictures and Vishal Film Factory’s joint production venture, Naan Sigappu Manithan, has Vishal and Lakshmi Menon in the lead. The pair is teaming up again after their 2013 hit, Pandianadu. The poster, released on the New Year day, held that the movie will be on theatres in 100 days.

Purampokku, written and directed by National Award winning director SP Jhananathan, was already on the news for its lead – Arya and Vijay Sethupathi. The team surprised movie buffs with another addition. Shaam, who featured in SP Jhananathan’s Eiyarkai, is all set to join the cast. The poster had the three stars, sporting white t-shirts, with a ‘Happy New Year’ board.

Arya had more reasons to celebrate. First-look poster of his other movie with director Magizh Thirumeni, of Thadayara Thaakka fame, Meagaamann, was also on the internet.

Posters of GV Prakash’s debut as an actor Pencil, STR’s Vaalu, Jithan 2 and Pulivaal were also released on the first day of the New Year.
