Review by : Harish Venkataraman

Starring: Vinay Pathak, Neha Dhupia
Direction: Saurabh Shukla
Music: Malhar
Production: Saurabh Shukla

Vinay Pathak and his favourite gang are back! He has formed a niche for himself and in this calendar year alone, he has released over 5 films, this being the last. And looks like the golden-hearted-boring middle aged geek image is losing his charm. Saurabh Shukla, after his 'Raat gayi toh baat gayi', now tries to woo the audience with a rom com. But has this overdose worked? Does the brilliant screen writer Saurabh Shukla find his directorial break? Unfortunately, we have to wait a little longer for that to happen.

Pappu Can't dance saala is a slow film.  is the story about the hate-love relationship between Vidyadhar (Vinay Pathak) and his dancer neighbour Mehek (Neha Dhupia). Vidyadhar is a small town man whose high ideals and lofty principles find no place in the fast, 'uncultured' and dirty city of Mumbai where he works as medical representative. On one of his what-is-the-world-coming-to days, Mehek walks in to occupy the house next door. A dancing aspirant, Mehek is all that appals Vidyadhar. Yet circumstances push them to live together and the rest is predictable.

Vinay Pathak and his usual team have been doling out films at an unimaginable pace. If only the pace of their films would catch up. The film has little to no laugh out loud moments. Being a Saurabh Shukla film, we expect comedy. But what e get is a wannabe romantic comedy that struggles to move forward. He takes the audience for granted. The  love between couple was never introduced. There were no scenes that depicted the chemistry. Mehek's stardom was also not justified. The characterisation was poor. How did a principled guy give in to illegal methods of accommodation? Weekly vigilance raids in a seemingly indisciplined city is tough to buy.

Vinay has perfected these roles in almost all his films. So there is no way that he can go wrong. But the real test of his performance will be when he is given different roles to play. Neha Dhupia was ok. Had her character been bubblier, she would have been more impactful. Rajat Kapoor comes across as the mysterious dance teacher. One waits to see what his role in the film is but we are just left waitng. Naseeruddin Shah is in a small guest appearance only to lead the film to its climax. Sanjay Mishra was impressive.

Technically the movie had a decent cinematography which was ruined due to bad colouring and visual effects. A film like this definitely did not require so many songs, especially Neha Dhupia's entry song. Editing could have been crisper. Resul Pookutty's name does increase expectations but with no effect.

Music fails to make a mark.

Overall, the film lacked the punch to make it worth watching. Too many songs ruin the already ruined cake.

Verdict: Pappu fail ho gaya.
