First time directors are trying to start their career with a fun-filled gen Y rom-com. But the last few releases have not left any impression. Can the new director and cast impress the audiences?
Jo Hum Chahein is about a money loving casanova Rohan (Sunny Gill) falling in love with a aspiring actress Neha (Simran Mundi). He is a stock broker who goes for shorter routes to make big bucks. For a bet he woos Neha and as you all can guess, he falls for her. Things change when a wealthy lady becomes a client and starts seeking sexual favours. Alcohol wins over love and loyalty on one drunken night and the expected follows.
The story holds nothing new except an urban set up and a few good scenes here and there. Pavan Gill impresses with his directorial capabilities in a few scenes but the rest falls flat. However, Pavan Gill as a screen writer completely falters. The relationship between the couple could have been given more time than the stock market to hold audience attention. The confrontation scene could have been dealt with creatively.
Sunny Gill is an eyeball catcher but his acting skills need sharpening. Simran Mundi looks unsteady in the begining but slowly as the film progresses she finds her footing. She shows promise of a good actor in the making. Alyy Khan is good and Achint Kaur impresses one and all with her performance. Yuri Suri falls prey to bad characterisation but delivers what he was asked to do. Samar Virmani makes a mark too. The rest of the cast is passable.
The film looks very stylish, thanks to Manush Nandan. His cinematography adds a richness to the film which works in its favour. Music by Sachin Gupta impresses with a few tracks that will find a place in most of the ipods. Editing by Bakul Matiyani is good but could have been crisper in the second half. First half impresses but the pacing drops drastically in the latter half.
Overall, the film tests your patience but that does not mean it is unwatchable. But with Don 2 coming, the film is most likely to be out without too many takers.
Verdict: Too many gills yet suffocating.
