Just
about 13 months after Dasavatharam,
we have yet another Kamal starrer
knocking at our doors. The same
time last year we thought that
it would be at least a couple
of years before we could see
the Universal Star on screen
again. But that was when Marmayogi
was in focus. A few unexpected
twists, a surprise announcement
and approximately six months
later, we have Unnaipol Oruvan
ready to hit screens.
The last time Kamal Haasan featured
in a remake was Vasool Raja
MBBS. That was inspired from
the cult classic Munnabhai M.B.B.S
in Hindi. Kamal will not consent
to a remake unless he sees something
special. In fact, he wouldn’t
consent to any movie if there
isn’t anything new and
exciting. That is reason enough
for us to look forward to Unnaipol
Oruvan with great interest.
Kamal would have seen something
very special in A Wednesday
to think about remaking it under
his home banner.

What is so special? It deals with
something that connects the lives
of every Indian. It is unfortunate
yet true that terrorism has become
a reality and a part of our lives.
Down south, we may be blessed to be
able to move around without as yet
having to fear any life threatening
elements. But, there are parts of
India where terror and fear are inescapable
parts of life. This bitter and shaking
reality is not far from us and that
is why Unnaipol Oruvan will be as
relevant as cinema can get.
After the rousing and inspiring account
of how terrorism can stir the common
man was delivered by Neeraj Pandey,
Kamal’s version will sure have
some added elements to increase the
impact and relevance to our part of
the country.
Apart from the social and national
aspect, Unnaipol Oruvan is exciting
because of its ensemble cast. We may
have had to wait more than two decades
to see two of India’s finest
actors come together, but we are sure
that the wait will be well rewarded
with a combination that is one of
its kinds. Kamal and Mohanlal will
be joined by a couple of other master
performers like Lakshmi and Nasser.
Shruti Haasan’s music is a marquee
attraction while Chakri Toleti’s
debut will be watched with interest.
Let’s hope that Unnaipol Oruvan
is an experience like never before.
