After taking the box offices of Kerala and Andhra by storm, the dubbed version of Urumi is releasing in Tamil. The Santosh Sivan directed 2011 Malayalam historical fantasy is set in the backdrop of Vasco da Gama's visit to Malabar and the uprising against Portuguese during that period. Jointly produced by the film's lead Prithviraj, director Santosh Sivan and Shaji Natesan, the film is written by Shankar Ramakrishnan. Urumi achieved commercial and critical acclaim as soon as it was released in Malayalam and the subsequent Telugu dubbing version also attained decent success. The Tamil version, titled Urumi: Padhinaintham Nootrandu Uraivaal, will be released this weekend. Urumi has an ensemble star cast including Prithviraj, Arya, Prabhu Deva, Genelia, Nithya Menon, Jagathy Sreekumar and Alexx ONell. In what is probably her first appearance in a direct South Indian film, Vidya Balan also appears in a cameo in Urumi. Also in the cast is Tabu, wet and drippy, for a song. The film blends history with present day events and is told in flash backs by Arya's character. Breathtaking visuals, as is customary in all of Santosh Sivan movies, shot in never seen before locations and an interesting story line would set this movie apart from any other releases this year. Although Deepak Dev's music had come in for criticism and plagiarism accusations, the movie has some lilting music suitable for the movie's backdrop. Urumi was made in a 200 million budget and is already considered a successful movie in Malayalam. The Tamil version will only enhance its reputation when it releases this weekend, with everything going for it.
