Transgenders and homosexuals are almost always portrayed in a bad or comical light. We have seen transgender villains, pimps and comedians but never a transgender hero! That is where Narthagi is going to be different. Director Vijaya Padma has assured that Narthagi will be a path breaking film about transgenders.
It is the story that depicts the journey of a boy who grows into a transgender and embraces dance as his profession and the support he gets from the girl who was in love with him. Kalki, a real-life transgender plays the adult character of the boy.
The film was making a buzz for having roped in GV Prakash Kumar to score the music and the songs have come of appreciation for its melody, sensitivity and experimentation. Na. Muthukumar has written the songs and the lyrics have proved to be strong and innovative.
The film is said to have 25 transgenders acting in various roles of which eight of them are highly significant. This film has apparently improved the financial status of these transgenders who were otherwise finding it difficult to run their lives with their meager income.
We hope this film will be a path breaker and will tread over the sensitive and off beat theme well. We can’t wait to see if the audiences are ready to welcome films such as this one.
