Anwar is the Tamil remake of the Malayalam movie of the same name starring Prithviraj, Prakashraj and Mamata Mohandas in the lead. Said to be inspired from the Hollywood thriller Traitor, Anwar tells the life of a Muslim youth who strays into the hands of anti-social elements.
When Anwar was released in Malayalam, the producer famously proclaimed that ‘the film has caused a loss of one and a half crores.’ We do not know what made him remake the movie in Tamil, maybe it is since he banks on Prithviraj’s star value in Tamil Nadu. Again, the producer had something to say about the Tamil remake. He criticized director Amal Neerad of demanding extra money to allow the print while Prithviraj and Prakashraj have dubbed in Tamil without charging a penny.
Anwar’s songs have been a rage when they were released and the Kizhakku Pookkum song earned Shreya Ghosal a few awards. It would be interesting to see how that ‘mapillapattu’ is adapted to Tamil. Music is scored by Gopi Sundar and the sound track has 7 songs.
Anwar was originally produced in Malayalam by Raj Zacharias and directed by Amal Neerad. Distributed by Red Carpet Movies Limited, the movie was made at a production budget of 5.2 crores.
