The
life of workers in the cracker
factories at Sivakasi is an
often discussed subject. We
all know that most of them work
in tough and sometimes harmful
conditions to bring a few moments
of joy and light into our lives.
The workers in these factories
even include children. In spite
knowing all these things, we
are helpless, unable to do anything
much to change the way things
are. Kollywood has at many times
tried to give a realistic glimpse
of what goes on in these factories
and in the lives of the workers.
But, they

have
remained just glimpses. Malayan may perhaps
be the first time when a full length feature
film has been made on the life of fire cracker
workers at Sivakasi, says director M.P Gopi.
The story demands very raw and dedicated
performances. Karan has done just that by
going in for a zero make up appearance and
wearing soiled and unkempt clothes throughout
the movie. Even heroine Shammu and others
in the cast have worked hard to get into
their characters.
The movie will not leave the realms of realism
even to the slightest extent, except for
the songs which have been scored by Dhina.
Major portions of the film have been shot
in and around the factories of Sivakasi
representing the lives of people living
in those areas. However, Malayan will not
be a plain account of their lives. The story
has been narrated with enough room for entertainment
in the regular commercial way, claim the
makers of Malayan. |
