A dissection of the society to see what
goes on inside, what is going wrong, what
is perpetrating crime and how it can be
stopped. Maathi Yosi seems to be a film
made along those lines. Such themes are
not uncommon these days. Over the last couple
of years or so we have had many films that
have focused on how youngsters lose their
way in life and end up being brutal criminals,
leaving aside a bright and peaceful life
that could have been theirs. Have the makers
of Maathi Yosi really chosen a different
path - will be the big question when the
film releases this Friday. Will Maathi Yosi
indeed provide a fresh and different perspective?
The film tells the story of four youngsters,
played by debutantes Harish, Alex, Gopal
and Visak, who become a thorn in the flesh
of their fellow villagers due to the constant
pranks that they are up to. But, there comes
a time when their pranks get bigger and
are no longer seen as pranks, they are more
like smalltime criminals. With the four
showing no signs of mending, they are ousted
from the village. There is only one place
they want to go to, Chennai, which they
believe is the fertile ground where their
areas of specialty can flourish. But, their
lives intersect with |

that of
a girl’s - played by Shammu. Does the girl change
their outlook towards life, what do they become, that
is what Maathi Yosi is all about.
It will be interesting to watch Shammu in such a role
after her highly acclaimed performance in the National
Award winning Kancheevaram. And, in a theme like this,
one can expect a fair share of action which the youngsters
should have reveled in. It is reported that the makers
have canned some truly huge scenes for the movie, one
of which involves a shot where over 1000 youngsters
have been used as extras. Says a lot about the producer’s
willingness to go any length.
Maathi Yosi has been written and directed by Nandha
Periyasaami, the man behind Oru Kallooriyin Kadhai,
the Arya-Sonia Agarwal starrer. While that college story
had not been able to do much to forward his career,
he is hoping that a change in his perspective (Maathi
Yosi) will be able to give him the much needed fillip.
Music for Maathi Yosi has been scored by debutante Guru
Kalyan.
Let’s wait and watch whether Maathi Yosi indeed
offers a different perspective and makes us think! |
