Kalavani; interesting title; does immediately
spark off the image of a young and smart
guy who takes to conning people. Something
along the lines of a Thiruda Thiruda or
the recent Kattradhu Kalavu. But, ask debutante
director Sargunam about Kalavani and he
is quick to answer that this is not about
a thief or conman. The ‘Kalavani’
here denotes a happy going, cute young boy
who is out to steal hearts. So, Kalavani
here is a bit of a pet name rather than
an indication of notoriety.
The film is about a young boy and girl who
are not exactly doing really well in what
they are supposed to be seriously involved;
studies. The young man, who never takes
anything seriously finds his name missing
in the list of 12th standard pass outs and
is soon sent packing to a nearby tutorial
to set things right. At the same tutorial,
in 11th standard is a girl. The goings on
between them is what Kalavani is all about.

Set in a rural milieu, Kalavani will look to present
the beauty and greenery of the villages of South Tamil
Nadu. For once, it is a relief because recently, almost
all films set in rural Tamil Nadu have focused on unruly
youth and violence. And, a bigger change will be that
Madurai is not the center of action this time. Director
Sargunam has chosen to go much closer to his own native
place in Thanjavur. The film, the director claims, is
perhaps the first one to use the Thanjavur slang and
way of life as a backdrop throughout the length. The
film has been shot in and around Thanjavur, in areas
like Mannargudi. The director has also said that a strip
of fields that adjoins the villages of the hero and
heroine is a very important location for the film and
has been shot beautifully.
Kalavani brings Pasanga fame Vimal (Meenakshisundaram)
in the lead as Arivazhagan alias Arukki. New find Helen
plays the heroine and has been christened Oviya for
the Tamil industry. Kalavani features other artistes
like Kanja Karuppu, Saranya, Ilavarasi and others. Music
has been scored by S.S. Kumaran (Poo fame).
The director has also said that the film is based on
a small real life incident and also involves the youthful
escapades of his group of friends. We can look forward
to a cute and charming experience. Kalavani has been
produced by Nasir, former manager to Mani Ratnam and
Madhavan. |
