The Veyil director’s second offering
is finally here. We were coming to a point
when almost everyone was forgetting that
such a movie was due for release. But, here
it is and we will be pleased and curious
to see how Vasantha Balan lives up to the
huge promise that he showed with his debut
venture.
Veyil was an unforgettable experience for
all Tamil cinema lovers. It was also a proud
moment when the movie was appreciated at
many international film festivals. So, why
did it take such a promising and talented
director so long to release his second film?
Well, the film industry can be a tricky
place to be and production issues are said
to be behind the delay of this film which
was supposed to be out in early 2009. However,
better late than never. So, we have Angadi
Theru hitting theaters this Friday.
Angadi Theru marks the return to the silver
screen of not only Veyil director Vasantha
Balan, it also brings back a young actress
who made a huge impact with her debut in
2007. All of you might still remember the
impact that ‘Kattradhu Tamil’
created. Anjali, the |

heroine of that hard hitting offbeat venture managed
to create a name for herself as an actress with potential.
Now, more than two years after Kattradhu Tamil, we will
get to see her again through Angadi Theru. It is not
usual for successful debutante heroines to hang around
for so long without any release. But, Anjali’s
move perhaps shows that she is persistent and is willing
to make the right choices. Angadi Theru will feature
Mahesh as the male lead opposite Anjali.
A highlight of Angadi Theru will definitely be its music.
There are very few occasions in Tamil cinema when two
independent composers have tuned songs for a movie.
Angadi Theru is one of the rare few. Vijay Anthony and
G.V. Prakash Kumar have tuned 2 and 4 songs respectively
for Angadi Theru. The songs definitely lean more towards
melody and softer feelings, an indication of the film’s
nature perhaps. Vasantha Balan’s eye for good
music had been evident even in Veyil with songs like
‘Uruguthe’ and Veyilodu Vilayaadu’.
We can definitely hope for some well shot and visualized
songs in Angadi Theru too.
Angadi Theru will be a closely watched release in Kollywood
because it will be a touchstone of sorts for its director
who promised a lot with his debut. Whether Veyil was
a flash in the pan or not will be decided by Angadi
Theru. Let’s hope that Angadi Theru sustains the
momentum created by Veyil for its maker. Tamil cinema
needs directors like Vasantha Balan to keep delivering
good cinema on a regular basis. |
