Thank god it’s Friday
       - Stylish weekend
By Harish V
December 14, 2007
This is an interesting week. Two biggies and three probable compete to attain the box office treasure, but will the final verdict be difficult to judge? I don’t think so. But still, let’s get on with this weekly analysis of the weekend movies and slowly we will move to one of the most predictable number one in TGIF’s history.
Billa

Mirugam

Sami’s new movie Mirugam is finally out after facing a tough stint with the censor board. Like Sami’s earlier film, Uyir, this movie is no stranger to controversy, as it got enough publicity; thanks to the director’s misbehavior with the heroine, and the subsequent ban imposed on him for one year by the council. Added to this hype, Padma Priya has shed her homely character, as this movie, about AIDS awareness, has many bold scenes. Therefore, quite rightly Mirugam is certified ‘A’. But amidst the controversy and publicity, the producers have made a grave mistake of releasing the movie without proper marketing, as many people have no clue when the movie is to be released. Unless the word of mouth is good, its box-office performance will seldom be impressive.

Why you should see? – Because Sami wants to convey an important message on AIDS through this movie and Padma Priya features many hot scenes.

Why you shouldn’t? – Do you really know that the movie is releasing today? Does it not bear a strong resemblance to Paruthiveeran?

1408

John Cusak and Samuel L. Jackson star in this creepy little movie titled 1408. The movie is based on Stephen King’s celebrated novel and amidst the recent attempts to film the writer’s novels this movie finds itself in a good place, right at the top. Of course, we are not taking into account the Shawshank redemptions and the Green Mile’s but just the horror inspirations. This movie is about a lone man’s battle against the evil in a hotel room 1408. John Cusak has given a superb performance and if at all we get a shiver down our spine its due to his acting. If you are open to psychological horror then 1408 will surely impress you.

Why you should see? – Because 1408 is one of the best Stephen King’s horror adaptation in years.

Why you shouldn’t? – Because you want more of the half-burnt face terrorizing a group of people than an evil room that plays on the psyche of the protagonist.

Stardust

Occasionally, Hollywood does churn out a fantasy-filled fairy tale and Stardust is one of those, and entertaining too. The movie is about the quest of a young man to present his beloved with a fallen star. To make it more interesting, stars like Michelle Pfeiffer as the evil witch and Robert-di-Nero as Captain Shakespeare outdo themselves to entertain us. Stardust is a very entertaining movie if you are a fan of fairy tale movies like Princess Bride and Enchanted. Hop in and feel the magic.

Why you should see? – Because you are a big fan of fairy tale movies and want to see a movie in the lines of Princess Bride or Treasure Island.

Why you shouldn’t? – Because you want logic in all the movies you see or if you think fairy tales are better to be read than seen.

I am Legend

Will Smith is back and he is ready to impress you with a host of stars, oops, sorry, guess I am confused about some other movie because, this time, he is alone. Due to chemical warfare people of New York City perish and Will Smith is the only person alive. But wait! To make it more interesting, the dead people turn into zombies at night. Will Smith tries to find a cure for the disease that has spread and what happens next is something we should see to experience. Will Smith is a bankable star and has a good fan following in India, so the movie is sure to open big. Added to that, I am Legend is being released worldwide today, so the hype is over the top. The movie will surely fetch a good start at the ticket windows this weekend but sustaining through the week will depend on the movie’s merits. Lets wait and see.

Why you should see? – A critic rightly said that it’s a combination of 28 Days Later and Cast Away, so do you want to miss it now?

Why you shouldn’t see it? – The movie is a little slow and people wanting to see a high-octane action film will be a little disappointed.

The pick of the week.

Behindwoods.com pick of the week – Billa

What can you expect when the ‘King of Opening’, does a remake of the Superstar movie with a young and stylish director? Magic. And Vishnu Vardhan offers that in full dose in Ajith’s version of the ever-popular Superstar’s movie Billa. It is an experience that should be cherished for a while now.

The trailer was awesome with the action sequences and camerawork similar to that of a Hollywood movie. With the music already ruling the roost, the movie was expected with bated breath. I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

Ajith is considered as the king of opening, and rightly so all the theatres around the world will carry a houseful board this whole weekend and perhaps weeks to come. Ajith looks stylish and rightly said by the Superstar himself only Ajith can carry the role. Nayantara has shed her homely image and looks slick and sexy.

Vishnu Vardhan, after Kurumbu, hit back with two hits Arindhum Ariyamalum and Pattiyal but this movie clearly won’t add to that list, as it is sure to become a blockbuster.

Why you should see? – Remake of the Superstar’s classic and it features the ultimate star Ajith.

Why you shouldn’t? – Because you don’t like remakes.

Verdict – Style, Magic, Ghosts and Zombies.
