To Superstar, on his birthday……..
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
December 12, 2007
There are many who are good, quite a few who are very good, but only one who is great. Greatness is a virtue, a position reserved for one man in an era and no one but the man who destiny has chosen can have it. The difference between being good and great might puzzle people who try to understand what sets the great apart from their peers who are gifted individuals themselves.
Rajinikanth - sivaji

Greatness is not a legacy that can be passed on, nor is it a habit or skill that can be taught; greatness is decided by destiny and man can do very little in terms of understanding the ways of destiny. For years, one man born and taken by life through the roads of Bangalore in a government bus and then by the hands of fate brought to Chennai, has shown us by his life the meaning of greatness. Today he turns but that is immaterial for he has immortalized his name in the hearts of every person who speaks Tamil. Today is Sivaji Rao Gaekwad’s birthday, maybe the biggest birthday celebration that Tamil Nadu sees every year, the celebration of yet another year of greatness.

We need not pay a tribute to Rajinikanth, we need not glorify his Superstar status, we need not say that his movies collect more than all other movies of a year put together. These are but small things in the life of a man who has set an example of simplicity to crores of his fans. This one is for Rajinikanth, the human being of amazing simplicity, modesty and humility. To the man for whom work is worship, worship is life and life a dedication to work and worship. Ask his fans why they very nearly worship him and the only thing that they have to say is that their idol acts well, only in front of the camera. Once the camera turns off he is an ordinary man, always smiling, with a sprightly walk and always willing to listen to anyone who has to say something. More than his style, his scorching charisma and his on screen persona it is this character that has won him admirers. Winning over admirers may have been the easier thing, but keeping them so for nearly three decades speaks about how unblemished his life has been in spite of being in full glare of the media.
The year 2007 is yet another year in which history was rewritten by a Rajinikanth starrer but the year also is generously distributed with memories of his wonderful character shining through. The magnanimity that he has shown on many occasions throughout the year maybe overshadows the epic that he created on screen. The image of a smiling Rajini making Venkat Prabhu feel comfortable enough to put his arms around his shoulders shows how down to earth he still is. The generous praises he showered on the crew of Billa and the eagerness that he displayed to know about the progress of the project and to see the promos shows that the fire within him still burns as bright as it was when he was still only Sivaji Rao Gaekwad. When he visited Kamal Haasan and Nagarjuna on the sets of their films just to wish them well, he showed us that he valued friendship as much as success and stature. Finally, the image of Rajinikanth the humble devotee (the media did capture that) at Tirupati one day before the release of Sivaji shows that the spiritual self in him has remained untouched in spite of 30 years of success.

Rajinikanth has shown us that greatness is not just about success, it is also about how we preserve our inner selves in waves of success.

To finish off with an anecdote: during the shooting of Chandramukhi the entire crew was traveling in a bus. Rajinikanth too was in the bus which was traveling at a fair speed. He was standing in the center of the bus without holding on to anything. Someone advised him ‘Sir, you may fall, please catch hold of something’. Rajinikanth smiled and replied ‘I was once a bus conductor; I know how to stand in a moving bus without falling.’ There might be humor in what he said but there is also a profound message. No matter what peaks you scale and what you become, never forget what you once were, never forget your roots.

Rajinikanth may not give messages in his movies, he entertains. But all the messages about being a good human being, he gives through his life, modesty, humility and simplicity. Here’s wishing the Superstar many more happy returns of the day.
