In
yet another shocking news to the Kollywood
industry, well-known playback singer Swarnalatha
died on Sunday at a private hospital in Chennai
after a prolonged lung infection. She was
37, was a spinster and was living with her
brother’s family in Saligramam, Chennai.
Born in Kerala and settled in Chennai, Ms.
Swarnalatha has sung in various languages
including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and
Malayalam since 1989. With her nightingale
voice, she has mesmerized audiences with songs
like "Maalayil Yaaro Manathodu Pesa"
from Kshatriyan, "Porale Ponnuthayi"
from Karuthamma as well as Rahman's "Mukkabla"
from Kadhalan. She won the National Award
for best playback singer for "Porale
Ponnuthayi".
She made her debut with the film Neethikku
Thandanai by rendering the song Chinnachiru
Kiliye Kannamma under the music baton of MS
Viswanathan.
Swarnalatha, who was also trained in harmonium
and keyboard, will be missed by the Kollywood
industry and her fans in particular. Her voice
will be indelible in people's memory for many
