In yet another shocking news to the Kollywood industry, well-known playback singer Swarnalatha died on Sunday at a private hospital in Chennai after a prolonged lung infection. She was 37, was a spinster and was living with her brother’s family in Saligramam, Chennai.

Born in Kerala and settled in Chennai, Ms. Swarnalatha has sung in various languages including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam since 1989. With her nightingale voice, she has mesmerized audiences with songs like "Maalayil Yaaro Manathodu Pesa" from Kshatriyan, "Porale Ponnuthayi" from Karuthamma as well as Rahman's "Mukkabla" from Kadhalan. She won the National Award for best playback singer for "Porale Ponnuthayi".

She made her debut with the film Neethikku Thandanai by rendering the song Chinnachiru Kiliye Kannamma under the music baton of MS Viswanathan.

Swarnalatha, who was also trained in harmonium and keyboard, will be missed by the Kollywood industry and her fans in particular. Her voice will be indelible in people's memory for many years to come. We offer our deepest condolence to the great singer's family and relatives.
