The High Court of Madras has ordered
the release of Unnaipol Oruvan,
however, with some restrictions.
Justice Rajasuriya on hearing the
defendants’ (Raaj Kamal Films
International) plea said that if
the court ordered a stay on the
release of Unnaipol Oruvan they
would suffer a loss of Rs. 40 crores
and several families depending on
the film’s release would be
affected.
The defendants, Kamal Haasan and
Chandra Haasan, also averred that
they did not violate the contractual
obligations as stated by the petitioners
Pyramid Saimira and did not make
any promises that they would pay
Rs. 7.82 lakhs before the release
of Unnaipol Oruvan.
The judge held that the defendants
could go ahead with the release
on September 18th but should pay
the court half the suit amount on
or before October 1st until the
case is settled. Failure to pay
the amount can attract a stay order
on the film’s screening.
