FICCI Frames 2009 started off on
a grand scale with luminaries attending
from various parts of the country.
After a magnificent inaugural session,
the conference began with discussions
on various subjects highlighting
the huge potential of the entertainment
industry.
In the discussion on Performing
Arts which was moderated by K S
Rajendran of National School of
Drama, keynote address was rendered
by Smt. Kanimozhi, MP. The distinguished
speakers were Sriram Parasuraman
(musician), T M Krishna (carnatic
music singer), P C Ramakrishna (theatre
personality) and Anita Rathnam (dancer).
The speakers discussed at length
about how the performing arts is
being neglected and suggested various
measures to combat this issue. They
felt that corporates should encourage
and support performing arts which
would definitely help the artists
concerned.
Sriram Parasuraman insisted on the
need for ‘no strings attached’
patronage for classical arts which
would keep the ‘core’
of the art form alive. When T M
Krishna spoke, he said that cinema
is a product of performing arts
but a different medium. Nevertheless
cinema, in its own way can help
the classical art forms flourish.
P C Ramakrishna felt the need for
something on the lines of Rangashankara
of Bengaluru in Chennai. He also
requested Kanimozhi to promote Museum
theatre which is very unique in
it acoustics and other infrastructural
facilities. He wished the corporates
could get together and construct
a ‘state of art’ theatre
in Chennai which would go a long
way in sustaining many art forms.
