In another interesting forum at
FICCI Frames 2009, the crème
de la crème of Indian film
industry gathered together for an
interesting debate on successful
film content for the future. The
session was moderated by Govind
Nihalani who gave us films like
Aakrosh, Ardh Sathya and Drohkal
(Kurudi Punal’s original).
Mani Ratnam, Kunal Kohli (maker
of Fanaa, Hum Tum), S S Rajamouli
(Magadheera), Anjum Rajabali, scriptwriter
and teacher at Whistling Woods and
Shailendra Singh of Percept Limited
took part in the discussion amidst
a houseful audience whose number
kept increasing every minute and
the hall was overflowing where people
did not hesitate to stand and listen
to the intelligentia of the film
industry speak.
Mani Ratnam started the session
on a lighter but a profound note,
“people in the film industry
call the content as God, perhaps
because nobody knows if it really
exists or not”. He said that
content especially in Tamil film
industry is improving with many
new talents churning out realistic
and interesting films. While Kunal
Kohli pointed out the relationship
between stars and deals which play
a great role in the quality of content,
Shailendra Singh opined that Indian
film makers should deliver films
for global consumer sensibilities.
Rajamouli differed from this and
said that he is keen to make films
for the indigenous audience. He
stated that Mani Ratnam remains
the reason for many talents to enter
the film industry. There was also
an interesting mention of how ‘Crouching
tiger hidden dragon’ made
by the Chinese became a major hit.
The debate was attended by directors
Vishnuvardhan, Mysskin, Sasi, Manobala,
Ramesh Arvind and many luminaries
from the film industry.
