Rajini wanted to break off from the Superstar
mould and do some truly good characters
like the cameo in Kuselan. The column had
said that it was his huge fan following
that was keeping him tied down to the style
and action kind of roles. Seeing movies
like Mozhi, Paruthiveeran and Subramaniapuram,
the Superstar also wanted to be an active
participant in the transformation of Tamil
cinema rather than just a spectator.
Now, at the meeting in Chennai, Rajini seems
to have echoed these thoughts. He was answering
questions from his fans and one of them
asked ‘I have been a die hard fan
of yours for many years now. What have you
done for me?’ Well, it would have
been very interesting to know what exactly
the fan expected Superstar to do for him,
but that is another matter. Rajini answered
‘When I entered the film industry,
I wanted to do only weighty and meaningful
roles and all my early films were like that.
But then my fans wanted me to fight, I did
action films, they wanted me to dance, I
danced, they wanted me to do comedy, I did
comedy. Have I not done my duty?
How true it is. Rajini has had to keep the
potentially dormant actor in him dormant
to keep his fans happy. Well, do his fans
think that they have done the right thing
in keeping him tied down to one kind of
role? Will Rajini be allowed to be part
of the change?
