After prolonged speculation about
release dates, it has been confirmed
that the Vishal-Shriya starrer Thoranai
will be releasing on May 29. This
release date, 5 days after the IPL
finals, reaffirms belief that Kollywood
has been holding back many of its
movies during the summer vacations
due to the apprehension of cricket
keeping audiences away from theaters.
Thoranai however will have missed
out on the summer vacations, with
schools slated to open during the
first week of June. This is an important
film both for Vishal and Shriya.
Vishal is trying to put the Sathyam
blues behind him while Shriya has
been looking for a big hit to reinforce
her foothold in Kollywood. Thoranai
has been directed by Saba Ayyappan
and is produced by Vishal’s
home banner GK Films. Music has
been scored by Mani Sharma. There
have been indications that the film
will be an out and out entertainer
in the true Vishal mode, but there
will be more emphasis on comedy
this time round. However, Thoranai
will be facing tough competition.
If the makers were trying to avoid
the IPL, they will be running right
into the T20 World Cup which begins
on the 5th of June. We don’t
know what Kollywood’s response
is going to be to this one. The
guess is that many wouldn’t
fancy withholding their films any
longer because it would give rise
to crowding the second half of the
year. Other films awaiting release
are Pokkisham, Nandhalala etc.
