A theatre in Mattakalappu
in Sri Lanka, which was screening the recently
released Mani Ratnam directed Raavanan, was
torched by a few Sinhalese miscreants. The
Sinhalese had been staunchly opposing the
release of Tamil films in their country following
the decision of the Tamil film producers,
directors, actors and technicians not to participate
in the IIFA event held recently.
The theatre owners were warned against
showcasing the film, but they decided to
screen it despite threats, sources say.
It may be recalled that Mani Ratnam had
planned to premiere Raavanan at the IIFA
but decided against it on the advice of
various film associations in the state.
The film’s lead stars Abhishek Bachchan,
Aishwarya Rai and Vikram also did not attend
the event.
