Today witnessed the birthday of
two stalwarts of the industry who
are indispensable in bringing worldwide
acclaim to Tamil cinema –
Ilayaraja and Mani Ratnam. Both
well respected and considered to
be pioneers in their fields of expertise,
Ilayaraja and Mani Ratnam are recognized
the world over for their contributions
to cinema.
Born in the year 1943, Ilayaraja
the first Asian Composer to score
a Symphony, holds a gold medal from
Trinity College of Music, London.
He is fondly addressed as Isaignani,
holds a credit of scoring 900 Indian
films and over 4,500 songs in his
career encompassing 30 years. His
latest credits include Naan Kadavul,
released at the beginning of 2009,
the music of which is critically
acclaimed. Nandhalala and Valmiki
are his upcoming movies ready for
release.
Mani Ratnam is an accomplished director
whose movies often set benchmark
for others in the profession. Mani
is also considered to be the role-model
of many young breed of directors
in Tamil and Indian cinema. Currently
busy with his bilingual epic Raavan,
Mani has to his credit many National
awards, Filmfare Awards and awards
from many International film festivals.
