Actor–producer–director
Thiagarajan’s historical project
Ponnar Sankar officially kick started
yesterday, July 12, 2009 at Vallvar
Kottam, Chennai. The grand set,
symbolic to the grandeur of the
movie’s production values,
witnessed the glitterati of Kollywood
and the Chief Minister and other
ministers of Tamil Nadu gracing
the occasion. The movie was officially
launched with Latha, Rajathi Ammal,
M N Rajam, Ambika, Sachu, Seetha,
Rambha and Uma Riaz Khan lighting
the auspicious Kuthuvilakku.
Napoleon startled the audience in
his kingly garb and clarified soon
enough that he’s taking part
in the opening sequence of the movie
that is scheduled to be filmed on
the stage.
Thiagarajan greeted the guests and
recollected how the project took
shape. “I wanted Prasanth
to be part of a historical venture
and requested the CM for a story.
Since he’s busy with his commitments,
he gave me his two books Payum Puli
and Ponnar Shankar of which I almost
immediately finalized the latter.
And I am proud to say that I have
selected some of the best artists
like Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Prakashraj,
Manorama, Ambika, Seetha and Napoleon,”
he said. According to him, the movie
will have extensive computer graphics
as much as 60%.
First scene of the movie was shot
during the event with Napoleon,
with the CM handling the camera,
AVM Saravanan handling the clap
board and Thiagarajan directing
the same.
Speaking at the occasion, Rajkiran
mentioned that he went through a
series of emotions after reading
the epic Ponnar Sankar. “I
received personal appreciation from
the CM for my performance in Thavamai
Thavamirundu, which was equivalent
to 100 national awards. I will try
my best to enhance my performance
in this movie,” he declared.
Napoleon, who addressed the gathering
briefly, mentioned that he read
the book in just about 4 days. He
also revealed that the CM congratulated
him for his Dasavatharam performance.
Prashanth expressed confidence that
Ponnar Sankar will be in line with
the Hollywood epic movie Troy. “My
dad helped me a lot to prepare for
this movie. I will repay him by
showing my full potential in the
movie,” he assured.
Lyricist Vaali read out a poem on
the occasion.
In his address, the CM praised all
the artistes who are part of the
venture and stated that Thiagarajan’s
effort and hard work are visible.
He hoped that Prashanth, who has
already done a double role in Jeans,
will do complete justice to his
Ponnar Sankar roles. “I always
have the opinion that Prashanth
is a promising star. This movie
will reinstate his position in Tamil
cinema and I will deliver a speech
on the movie’s success event,”
the CM opined. |
