Noted carnatic singer DK Pattammal
expired at her residence in Chennai
yesterday (July 16th). The singer
was 90 and died due to old age ailments.
She was survived by her husband
and two sons.
DK Pattammal has sung in about 100
films and they were all based on
carnatic music only. She has been
awarded several top honors by the
government including the Padma Bhushan,
Padma Vibhushan, Kalaimamani etc.
Pattammal also actively took part
in the freedom movement and ensured
that her stage shows featured Bharathiar’s
songs to instill the freedom spirit
among her audience.
The singer’s granddaughter
Nityashree Mahadevan is a singer
in her own right.
