There have been some legendary rivalries
in the history of Tamil cinema which the average
moviegoer will confidently rattle off as MGR
– Sivaji, Rajini – Kamal, Vijay
– Ajith, Vikram – Suriya, and
now Dhanush – STR. The stars in question
for the most part view their rivals as healthy
competitors and try not to fuel the flames
of the intense rivalry that blazes between
opposing fans. To prevent things from turning
ugly, star competitors are for the most part
willing to say generous things about their
rivals, make guest appearances in each other’s
films and generally put up a show of camaraderie.
Heroine sharing is another thing they do so
that no ill will is generated.
In the black and white era, the leading ladies
of the day like Saroja Devi, Padmini would
be seen alternately in MGR as well as Sivaji’s
films. The trend continues to this day.
Rajini – Kamal
Sri Devi and Sripriya were the heroines most
favored by these Superstars in their younger
days and for every two films either of them
did with Rajini or Kamal two more will follow
opposite the other one. The duo continues
to share heroines with Soundarya, Rambha,
Jyotika, Manisha Koirala being some of the
Vijay – Ajith
Trisha, Nayanthara, and Asin have been the
heroines who have been allotted equal number
of films with two of the top – ranked
stars for this generation. Trisha has done
Tirupaachi, Gilli, and Aadhi with Vijay and
then followed it up with Ji, Kireedam with
Ajith. Asin had Sivakasi with Vijay and Varalaru
with Ajith. Nayanthara did Billa and Aegan
with Ajith, and Villu with Vijay.
Vikram – Suriya
These reel life rivals recently released films
with the same heroine. Anushka did Singam
with Suriya and was seen in a powerful role
in Vikram’s Deiva Thirumagal. Jo and
Trisha have also shared screen space with
both the stars.
Dhanush – STR
Nayanthara was seen in STR’s Vallavan
where they shared sizzling chemistry. Her
next outing was Yaaradi Nee Mohini where she
played the object of Dhanush’s affection.
Suriya – Karthi
Suriya and Karthi are not considered onscreen
rivals but they do have a penchant for sharing
heroines in the true spirit of brotherhood.
Tamannah did Ayan with Suriya which was a
smash hit and then did Paiya and Siruthai
with Karthi. Both the films were hits so she
proved she was a lucky mascot for the brothers.
Kajal Agarwal did Naan Mahaan Alla with Karthi
and has been roped in for Maatran with Suriya.
