Here, we
are looking at a possibility of a 6 to 7
daylong weekend. But unfortunately the Tamil
releases are not going to capitalize on
the long weekend and will release only on
the 15th of January. But two movies are
ready to grab the monster weekend. Lets
analyze all the 9 movies that are going
to release in this long weekend.
Pazhani
Perarasu is back and this time not with
Ilaya Thalapathi or Thala but with Chinna
Thalapathy. Yes, the king of formula movies
is back yet again in a genre which is no
stranger to him. And yet again with the
name of a place as his title. Perarasu has
directed four films and it is easy to decipher
the quality of the film and the script slowly
deteriorating. First it was the super hit
Thirupachi followed by the above average
Sivakasi and later by the Average Thirupati.
Soon came the forgettable Dharmapuri. But
Bharath, the new sensation in town has been
selecting his script with utmost care till
now and we will have to see if this script
does change Perarasu’s life script.
Kajal Agarwal is the heroine of this masala
fare. The expectation for the movie is not
that great, and the long run of the movie
will have to rely on the word of mouth.
Hope the Thai Thirunaal, gives the much-needed
break for Perarasu.
Why you should see it? – Because
you haven’t seen the last few movies
of Perarasu.
Why you shouldn’t? – You have
seen Perarasu’s last few movies.
Pidichirukku
It’s a battle between the guru and
the sishya as Lingusamy’s assistant
director Kanagu is going to be up against
Lingusamy’s much awaited Bheema. Ashok,
who made his debut with Muruga is the hero
of the movie and the movie is an attempt
on simple cinema, I mean the one with no-violence
or no-dance routines. The posters all over
the city have indeed made an impact as it
looks very refreshing and very simple. I
usually have an instinct to predict the
fate of a movie and my Harish instinct (lol)
says that the movie will surely be a product
worth a watch. Lets hope my intuition comes
true.
Why you should see it? – It looks
like a refreshing change from the routine
masala movies.
Why you shouldn’t? - New director
with little known actors, when was the last
time such a movie became a hit?
Vazhthukal
Maddy is back with what he does best, romance.
And this time he is paired yet again with
Bhavana, the pair was last seen together
in the Masala fare Arya. Seeman who forayed
into acting with Pallikoodam and Madhavan’s
latest movie Evano oruvan will be back doing
what he does best, direction. Seeman and
Madhavan had a successful partnership with
their Thambi becoming a hit, but this time
the two are concentrating not on the society
but the family. The movie is a romantic
family entertainer with a good music score
from Yuvan Shankar Raja. The movie is sure
to bring in the family audience but will
surely find the road difficult as this week’s
pick of the week is sure to lure the family
audience away from this movie. But the producers
have not confirmed the release of the movie
this Pongal, so there is a big doubt whether
the movie will indeed release this Pongal.
Lets hope it does happen.
Why you should see it? – After a
long time we will see a calm and romantic
Madhavan. Do girls need any other reason?
Why you shouldn’t? - Because the
movie has little to offer for the people
who are expecting an action movie.
Indralogathil Na. Azhagappan
Vadivelu is back donning the pivotal role
after the stupendous success of his Imsai
Arasan 23aam Pulikesi. Here he is donning
three roles, Indran, Yeman and of the innocent
Azhagappan. The movie is in the fantasy
comedy genre, which is almost a rarity in
Tamil film industry. Thambi Ramiah directs
the movie and he is said to play an important
role in the movie too. The highlight of
the movie is the huge sets erected by Sabu
Cyril and an item song by Shriya.
Sabesh Murali’s music had very little
to offer but the audience had no expectation
on the music department, so it wont do any
big damage to the films prospects. The movie
is sure to get a superb opening and the
producers are sure to laugh all the way
to the bank.
Why you should see it? – Vadivel,
Vadivel and Vadivel
Why you shouldn’t? - Because you
like only subtle and natural comedy
Across the Universe
An original musical film, Across The Universe
is a fictional love story set in the 1960s
amidst the anti-war protests, the struggle
for free speech and civil rights. The story
moves from England to America and to Vietnam.
A combination of live action and animation,
the film is paired with many songs by The
Beatles that defined time. The movie will
surely be welcomed by the Beatles fans,
but if you think why am I talking about
a bug, then there is a chance you might
not enjoy the movie. Director Julie Taymor
is quite famous for her work in the film
Titus and Frida, both Oscar nominees and
this movie has a few Golden globe nominations
up its sleeve too.
Why you should see it? – It’s
a musical, directed by Julie Taymour, it
should be good.
Why you shouldn’t? - Indians hate
Hollywood musical as much as Westerner’s
hate our dance and song routine.
Kaalai
Kaalai is Silambarasan’s release
after 14 months; his fans have been waiting
patiently to see him on screen. With his
latest foray into television his fan base
has quadrupled and he has a big woman following,
but that is not likely to help in case of
Kaalai if you see the trailer and the stills.
It looks like a out and out commercial potboiler
with plenty of action and glamour. Tarun
Gopi who last directed Vishal’s hit
movie Thimiru is the director. Tarun Gopi
had impressed all with his tight screenplay
in his first venture and we will hope that
his second movie will be no different. But
in the trailers we can see a fight in the
bus stand, which was one of the highlight
scenes in Thimiru. You can’t help
but question; what is with Tarun and Bus
stands? The glamour quotient of the film
is filled with heroines Vedika and Nila.
We just hope this movie becomes a bigger
hit than Manmadhan for Silambarasan.
Why you should see it? – Simbu is
back after a hiatus and is all set to rock
with the guy who gave us Thimiru.
Why you shouldn’t? - People expecting
a solid and creative script will sure be
disappointed.
Bheema
Lingusamy’s magnum opus is finally
going to release this Pongal. After many
confusions, and controversies, and innumerable
date changes, Bheema is finally seeing the
light of the day. Vikram is having a release
after almost two years, so Vikram fans will
surely have a treat this Pongal and Trisha
after her memorable role in Kreedom is back
and as usual looks ravishing in the trailers
and the stills. Lingusamy whose last work
was the thundering Sandakozhi is so confident
that his latest offering will woe the audience
and so is the producer A.M. Ratnam who is
going through a financial crisis, and the
success of the movie will do a world of
good for this risk taking producer. The
songs have been in the charts for quite
a while and Harris Jeyaraj’s tunes
have got thundering response. The movie
is sure to take a thundering opening but
will it be able to have good run at the
box-office? Lets wait and see.
Why you should see it? – Vikram and
Trisha hit combo, Lingusamy, Harris Jeyaraj,
Prakash Raj, do u need anymore reasons?
Why you shouldn’t? - While seeing
the trailer it had a small resemblance to
Sarathkumar’s Vedan. Don’t tell
me, Vikram is a cop.
Halla bol
Rajkumar Santoshi is the angry young (ahem
ahem) director of Bollywood. He always takes
movies on society and his anguish against
the corrupt system; even though his movies
have not got commercial success lately he
has one enviable repertoire. Damini, Gayal,
Lajja, China Gate, The legend of Bhagat
Singh, Khakee etc and his comedy movie Andaz
Apna Apna even though tasted little success
at the box office is considered a classic.
Anyways, coming to Halla bol, Rajkumar Santoshi
has paired yet again with his favorite hero
Ajay Devgan to tell us a tale about a smalltime
theatre artist who becomes a superstar but
his life changes when he goes to a party.
The movie is said to be about the Jessica
Lal murder. Vidya Balan plays the female
lead for this high octane/ action/ drama.
Why you should see it? – It’s
a Raj Kumar Santoshi movie.
Why you shouldn’t? - It’s a
Raj kumar santoshi movie. He can never be
predicted, after giving a classic Legend
of Bhagat Singh he gave a movie called Family,
which is a classic in the other extreme.
Behindwoods.com pick of the week
- Pirivom Santhippom
One of the most awaited family drama; no
one expected this movie to get such pre-release
buzz. Karu Pazhaniappan, who made the unforgettable
Parthiban kanavu and the average Sivapadigaram,
is back with this family movie. Cheran and
Sneha are the lead pair. Sneha plays a part
of a girl who has lived her life with her
parents and doesn’t have any close
relations but Cheran plays the character
of a person who was born in a big joint
family. When these two people marry what
will be the consequences? And what all the
problems faced by the couple due to this
is told in an eloquent way. And it is said
that it will make the audience long to have
a joint family, lets hope it does.
The movie has some amazing tunes tuned
by Vidya Sagar and it is sure to get a tremendous
opening. Due to the absence of any family
movie in recent times, the movie is sure
to become a good hit.
Why you should see it? – It’s
a complete family entertainer.
Why you shouldn’t? - No glamour and
no violence? Who will go for such a movie?
