Lagaan and Chak De probably redefined the
genre of movies based on sports. Tamil films
took the cue soon enough and as a result we
have had an array of sports based movies to
boast about. What with Potta Potti, a film
based on cricket featuring the ex-cricketer
Sadagopan Ramesh releasing this weekend, here's
a low down on the sports-themed Tamil movies
released in the recent past.
Like Potta Potti, Chennai 28, I Love You
Da and Priyamani Thozhi featured cricket in
all its glory. In fact, Chennai 28 popularized
gully cricket and made it a cult.
Jeyam Ravi's M. Kumaran, S/o. Mahalakshmi
and Badri focused on the game of boxing although
both had enough love and sentiment in equal
measures to tug at your heart.
The indigenous game of Kabbadi found itself
in limelight, thanks to movies like Ghilli
and Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu. Despite made in
a shoe string budget, the latter even made
the director a star and raked in moolah.
