The South Indian Nadigar Sangam
has been conducting stage dramas
since August 15. And on the final
day on Sunday, Nadigar Sangam president
Sarath Kumar and Secretary Radha
Ravi staged a play titled ‘Vetri
Vetri Vetri’.
Superstar Rajinikanth took part
in the final day function and also
distributed mementoes to yesteryear
actresses M N Rajyam and Anjali
Devi. Speaking in the function Rajinikanth
said that he was not punctual for
the event since he considered it
a family function.
He said that in the year 1979 the
Nadigar Sangam building was inaugurated
and M G R presided over the function.
Rajini added that for this event
policemen did not allow him inside
the auditorium and after the intervention
of some volunteers he was permitted
inside, but had to watch the play
‘Ashoka Charavarthi’
played by Sivaji Ganesan standing
in one corner of the hall.
Recalling his past experience on
how he became an actor, Rajini said
that he first started as a stage
artist and then moved on to the
film institute where he did a two
year course in acting when director
K Balachander spotted him and taught
him how to act in front of the camera.
Pointing out that Nadigar Sangam
has a massive 18-grounds land in
T Nagar which has the potential
to earn few lakhs per month, yet
no initiative is being taken, Rajini
compared this situation to selling
coconuts on a golden plate.
The Superstar added that with Kalaignar’s
rule they can always approach him
and ask for help. The place can
be developed and made to earn money,
like building beautiful theatres.
He also stated that people should
not forget the services rendered
by M G R, Sivaji, Vijayakanth, Sarath
Kumar and Radha Ravi who played
a great role in developing the Nadigar
Sangam and also helped clear the
debts.
