Bharathiraja strikes Kalaignar

Finally, all the guessing has come to an end – director Bharathiraja will direct a mega serial for Kalaignar TV. Titled Thekkathi Ponnu, it stars Napoleon, Ranjitha, Chandrashekar, Swarnamalya and many other character actors. The title music is by Ilayaraja. Bharathiraja promises it will be as innovative as 16 Vayathinile was, and different from all the serials on air today. “All that we conceive of

cannot be realized in cinema,” said the director, “but television is different: you don’t have the financial risks and the limited time factor cinema has. With television we can explore more deeply the themes we want to.”

Thekkathi Ponnu is the story of three villages, three families and three generations. And the generations-long conflict between the families of Napoleon and Chandrashekar. Another aspect of the story is to portray village girls and how they possess gender equality without having to fight for it the way girls in towns and cities have to. The serial would like to show how, in work and relationships and family, women in villages seem to share more equally in villages.
