120 Behindwoods visitors had one of their
best days of 2011 when they got a rare opportunity
to meet their screen idol, Ilaya Thalapathy
Vijay, at an event organized at the Four Frames
preview theatre. The excitement in the atmosphere
was palpable right from 5.30 PM when the lucky
winners arrived at the venue for the dream
interaction. The buzz around the auditorium
could not be missed and no prizes for guessing
that all the talk was about Velayudham. In
fact, the festive mood in the theatre befitted
a Diwali celebration; after all Velayudham
was Vijay’s very own cracker that set
Diwali alight for the whole of Tamil Nadu.
Vijay arrive shortly past 6 p.m. dressed in
cool T shirt and jeans with stylish shoes
to match; he was in a very cheerful mood,
obviously delighted at the reception that
Velayudham was continuing to receive all over.
Everyone present would have definitely realized
that Vijay relies very little on make up for
his on screen looks.
Unlike in his films, Vijay chose to make a
very casual and nondescript entry into the
auditorium, but the fans were going to have
none of it as they exploded into wild cheers
as he stepped in. It all took a while to settle
down and it was time for the fans to speak
to their on screen idol. Most of the fans
said that they thoroughly enjoyed Velayudham
and wanted to know more about his future projects.
There was particular interest in the Vijay-AR
Murugadoss project which is scheduled to begin
shortly. There was also a quick quip or two
on Yohaan, the Gautham Menon film that is
set to begin in 2012.
One fan wanted Vijay to take up village based
subjects like Paruthiveeran for the sole reason
that this would bring Vijay to places like
Theni and Madurai, the fan’s native
place so that his numerous fans in those parts
would get to see him. Another fan said that
now that he had been doing entertainers for
nearly 20 years, he would like to see Vijay
do some award winning films. But, Vijay’s
response was quick. He said that he was not
interested in awards and wanted to be known
as an entertainer. Another fan wanted to know
the reason behind Vijay’s films always
having the best dance numbers and hit songs.
To this Vijay said that he did nothing special
to make this happen, it is just that things
fall in place each time and that he liked
to let things happen.
There were many other questions by eager fans
and Vijay answered each of them patiently.
The aspect about Vijay that struck the fans
most was the casual manner in which Vijay
handled the entire event. There was never
a moment when anyone felt that they were speaking
to one of the biggest stars in Tamil Nadu.
He answered all questions in typical Chennai
lingo, addressing many of his fans as ‘Anna’,
in a style that is very unique to him. He
also sportingly agreed to a fan’s request
to sing a couple of lines from the ‘Sonja
puriyadhu’ song from Velayudham.
This was followed by a photo session where
all the fans got themselves clicked with Ilaya
Thalapathy; a moment they will cherish for
a long time to come. Vijay patiently posed
for all the cameras in a session that went
on for more than 30 minutes.
Earlier, Vijay cut a huge cake to celebrate
the event and the success of Velayudham. He
was also garlanded and presented a sceptre
to mark the winning mood of Velayudham; the
fans went delirious with excitement during
this. On his way out of the theatre, Vijay
even obliged to quite a few autograph requests.
Everyone present thoroughly enjoyed the event,
which, thanks to the wonderful interiors of
the Four Frames Theater looked more like a
personal interaction with the star, rather
than being a glimpse from the crowd. The event
was a big success mostly due to Vijay’s
patient and frank answering of all questions.
In short, everyone present was delighted and
left with a glowing feeling of a Sunday evening
spent in the best possible manner; the snapshots
of the day being mementos of an unforgettable
event.
