THE
GREAT TAMIL SUMMER! |
|
What with the insanely soaring mercury
levels threatening to shrivel us up, there
might be respite in the form of entertainment
after all. Albeit not hugely impressive,
the line up of releases are diverse and
might just fit the bill rightly if you
are looking to kill time during one of
those terribly hot mid-summer afternoons.
Possible summer releases this year include
Rettaisuzhi, Sura, Irumbu kottai Murattu
Singam (IKMS), Guru Shishyan, Kutti Pisaasu
and Madrasapattinam.
Although the movie traces the lives and
times of two village friends who share
extremely different interests, the target
of Rettaisuzhi, releasing on the 23rd
of April, is most likely kids. For the
movie also has a bunch of kids playing
significant roles. Two legends of Tamil
cinema Balachander and Bharathiraja play
the friends whose friendship, squabbles
and other extremities form the crux of
the movie. And to fuel the fire, there
is also a romantic angle in the movie
with Anjali playing the girl in question.
Rettaisuzhi is directed by writer Tamira
and produced by Shankar’s S pictures.
Before we forget Vettaikaran for Anushka
and its songs, Vijay’s back with
Sura. He has the sensational Tamannah
to woo this time and the fact that the
songs are already a rage among his

fans
is the catch here. Inside sources who watched the promo
clips swear by Vijay’s dance to the racy songs
tuned by Mani Sharma. And what about the rest? Well
there’s Vijay, there is Tamannah. What else you
need anyways? April 30 is set as the release date for
Sura.
Tamil’s first cowboy movie IKMS is releasing on
May 7. Directed by the talented Simbudevan whose ground
breaking Imsai Arasan set benchmarks for historical
comedies, IKMS will have Lawrence romancing a bevy of
beauties including Sandhya, Padmapriya and Lakshmi Rai.
Not much is available on the movie’s plot, but
it’s expected to be a comedy served with a generous
serving of romance.
The boisterous Sathyaraj takes on the aspiring mass
hero Sundar C in Guru Sishyan that is likely to hit
the screens on May 7. Sundar mends Sathyaraj’s
ways, who is cast as a big time flirt (like you even
needed to tell this) married to Sundar’s sister.
Once famous for movies like Aadi Velli and Durga, Rama
Narayanan is back in business with Kutty Pissasu this
summer. This being his 120th film, the target audience
is children. There is said to be computer graphics for
the major portion of the movie that has Sangeetha and
Riyaz Khan playing pivotal roles apart from the quintessential
kids.
The period romantic drama Madrasapattinam will be released
sometime in May and is directed by Vijay whose Kireedam
and Poi Solla Porom were branded as promising ventures.
The dreamy-eyed Arya plays the desi boy who falls in
love with a white woman. Something that’s not
seen in a while in Tamil cinema, probably after Naadodi
Thendral.
So pick your choice from the kids’ specials, comic
capers or period love saga and have your share of the
Kollywood summer bonanza. |
