KOLLYWOOD
RELEASES CRIMINALS THIS FRIDAY!

The
season seems to belong to the
bad men. Criminals being the
main protagonists have always
remained a subject of fascination
for cinema. To delve into the
psyche of the perverted mind
is something that film makers
have reveled in. Almost every
leading director of our times
has tried their hand at having
a man with a criminal background
at the center of their plot.
It could be the good kind of
criminal (i.e. the Robinhood
type), or the man who was forced
by circumstances to take up
the gun/sickle etc., the habitual
criminal who does it for some
queer psychological pleasure
or an offspring of the mean
streets who knows nothing but
violence. We have had all kinds
of them. Kollywood has loved
taking law into its own hands.
From Mani Ratnam to the young
Sasikumar, everyone has dealt
with crime and criminals in
their movies. But, looking at
the line up of releases this
week, one feels that the ‘crime
rate’ of Kollywood has
shot up more than ever before.
Four movies, all of them seemingly
neck deep in unlawful activities,
are on the prowl and it is tough
to say who will win in this
war of the outlaws. Ameer is
out as the Yogi; the Chennai
gangster who wields the gun.
The trailer might have given
you a fair idea about the nature
of the film. Brutally violent
might be quite a light term
to describe the content that
one saw. But, knowing Ameer
and his brand of cinema (from
Paruthiveeran), we don’t
expect anything other than a
hard hitting account of a gangster’s
life. More so because he has
not just acted in the movie
but is also responsible for
the story and screenplay.

Sibiraj is following his dad’s footsteps.
Sathyaraj, if you remember, started his
career as a mean and bad man, making his
name as one of the top villains of Tamil
cinema before being finally offered the
lead. Even then, his roles did have a negative
streak running through them. Now, his son
Sibiraj dons the first negative role of
his career and it will be interesting to
see if this choice makes a difference to
his career which has not had much luck thus
far. As a mastermind who executes the robbery
of a bank, Naanayam is sure to offer him
the scope to perform. From the look of the
trailer, even though Prasanna plays the
lead protagonist, one feels that the negative
role will not have any less footage or mileage
in the movie. Naanayam is the second crime
driven movie of the week.
Then, of course, there are Renigunta and
Naan Avanillai 2. Some might think twice
of slotting Naan Avanillai 2 into the crime
genre. It might not be the conventional
sort of guns, knives, kicks and punches
crime, but the Casanova is no Good Samaritan
either. He is the master swindler who targets
almost any good looking woman that he comes
across. Well, fraud might be the more appropriate
word than crime here, but there is no doubt
that the protagonist of Naan Avanillai 2
is also on the wrong side of the law, not
to mention the angst of many a beautiful
woman.
Renigunta might not be a big name in terms
of release. It is full of new faces and
has not really been promoted all that aggressively.
But, it is not even an inch behind its more
fancied competitors in the lawlessness part.
The movie itself is based on five escaped
inmates of a juvenile prison. Then, we know
where the film is headed for. In fact, the
censor board had too tough a time certifying
the movie and the crew had to take the matter
all the way to Mumbai for a solution. All
that notwithstanding, the movie has generated
positive vibes all through Kollywood for
what is reportedly a very strong approach
to a socially relevant issue.
Four movies, four themes that have scope
for crime, violence and fraud. The censors
did have their hands full over the past
few days. Come Friday, it will be a battle
of outlaws at the box office. Let’s
see who outwits the others. |
