2010:
KOLLYWOOD’S YEAR AHEAD |
|
The time has come to look ahead.
2010 has set in and brings with
it a whole lot of expectations
and hopes. What else will we
be looking forward to other
than the biggest movies of the
year and other events that relate
to cinema? Sports buffs will
be over the moon this year as
there are many top notch international
events waiting for them including
the T20 World Cup, the IPL,
the FIFA World Cup, the Hockey
World Cup, the Commonwealth
Games and other regular events
of the calendar year. Add to
that the excitement that is
brought about by the return
of Michael Schumacher to F1
racing. We can promise Tamil
cine buffs that 2010 is going
to be no less exciting for you.
Yes, Pongal was not the usual
star studded affair in spite
of some very interesting releases.
But, the star march starts in
early February with Ajith appearing
in Asal, his 49th movie. But,
2010 will not be about the 49th
movie, it will be about the
half century of two of the biggest,
young (relatively) stars of
Kollywood. It is going to be
50 for both Vijay and Ajith.
While Vijay is on his way with
the shooting for Sura progressing
fast, Ajith is yet to finalize
his plans though there are pretty
strong indications that it might
be Gautham Menon who gets his
dates. Sura is definitely a
2010 offering though the date
has not yet been announced and
Ajith’s 50th too is expected
to be ready before 2011 begins.
Just imagine, what have been
said above are the relatively
smaller things as compared to
the real big draws of 2010.

You guessed right, Superstar and Universal
Star are likely to have releases in the
year. Rajini’s Endhiran is a sure
shot 2010 release, as confirmed in Shankar’s
blog where it was said that 90% of the shooting
is completed. Well, it has never got bigger
for Kollywood. More than 100 crores riding
on one movie, Superstar in a double roll,
Shankar’s dream project that has been
on his mind for more than a decade, a sci-fi
action thriller etc…. Endhiran is
going to be the event to look out for this
year. Everyone knows that Shankar has been
carrying Endhiran in his mind as a pet project
for many years. After doing rounds of Kollywood
and Bollywood, it was momentous that it
landed with Superstar and there could not
have been a better way to end years of waiting.
Let’s hope that Shankar’s vision
and imagination will give us a product that
will have an ‘Avatar-like’ impact
on Kollywood. The similarities are uncanny,
even James Cameron carried the idea in his
mind for 14 years before realizing it on
screen.
Then there is Kamal Haasan’s comedy
flick, his first outright comedy after Mumbai
Express and the fact that it is going to
be directed by K.S. Ravikumar only makes
it bigger. Though an official announcement
is being awaited, one can be assured that
with KSR’s kind of speed the movie
will surely be ready in 2010. But, the bigger
news for Kamal fans is that Marmayogi is
back in the scheme of things. After looking
like another Marudanayagam for a brief period,
plans for re-launching Marmayogi are reportedly
being laid out and an announcement in this
regard can be expected this year.
That was about the stars, but more than
just stars there are also others that we
are looking forward to. After Ayudha Ezhuthu
in 2004, Mani Ratnam will be having a straight
Tamil release this year when Raavan makes
it to screens. According to sources the
movie is complete and will be rolled out
soon. It has been a long wait for an original
Mani Ratnam Tamil movie and, there will
also be a Rahman fest for all music lovers.
2010 has already begun on a positive note
with the mesmerizing tunes of Vinnai Thaandi
Varuvaayaa. And, there is more to come.
Endhiran and Raavan have been composed,
recorded and are ready to cast a spell,
only waiting for a go ahead from Shankar
and Mani Ratnam respectively. Meanwhile,
there are also talks that Gautham will turn
to Rahman for Ajith’s 50th film and
KSR too might be thinking about him for
the Kamal project. If all these do materialize
we will be having 5 Rahman albums this year,
a tremendous leap from the 2009 disappointment
which saw none.
So, the signs look good, the line ups are
impressive, and we are eager. Let’s
hope that 2010 is a year of movies that
entertain, excite and also educate. Are
we asking for too much? |
