Why cow vigilante groups not be banned: SC to Centre, states

During the hearing on a petition on cow vigilante groups, the Supreme Court on Friday reportedly asked why the self-styled ‘gau rakshaks dal’ be not banned for allegedly creating disharmony among various communities and castes and indulging in mob violence. The court reportedly asked the Centre and six states to file a response within three weeks. The petitioner, Congress leader Tehseen Poonawalla, said cow vigilante groups have “unleashed terror on minorities and Dalits”. He also alleged the Centre “has proven ineffective in reining in terror unleashed by these groups”.
