Facing severe criticisms for levying penalty on non-maintenance of minimum balance in its bank accounts, the State Bank of India on Wednesday reportedly justified its move saying it needs to levy such charges to balance the burden of managing a large number of no-frills Jan Dhan accounts. Clarifying that the penalty would not apply to Jan Dhan accounts, the bank added that it would reconsider the decision if it receives any formal communication from the government.
